About the Opportunity:
The Office of Institutional Research supports the evaluation and planning efforts of Brown University’s senior administration by initiating and conducting studies on the University’s policies, academic programs, and environment.

We seek to hire a Senior Data Analyst for Institutional Research, a role that is part of the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) team responsible for studies supporting planning and evaluation of academic programs across the University and  external reporting including required federal reporting, rankings and public display of information on the OIR website. The team designs and carries out studies related to a wide range of areas including admission, enrollment, retention, course progression, graduation rates, student satisfaction, athletics, degree programs, post-graduation outcomes and faculty resources.

The Senior Data Analyst is responsible for collecting, editing, analyzing, and disseminating data and information about different aspects of the University. Key areas of focus for this position include:

  • Updating, collecting and presenting data in support of academic assessment, strategic planning, and departmentally focused planning.
  • Managing data extraction and technical report writing for OIR.
  • Managing revisions and updates to data within data internal systems; maintaining comprehensive documentation of all projects so that studies are replicable in future.
  • Responding to ad hoc requests for data from senior officers, University committees, and other academic and administrative offices in a manner that is accurate, expeditious, and clear.
  • Supporting and contributing to Brown’s data governance initiatives specifically as related to the data dictionary tool, Data Cookbook.

The incumbent will be expected to work independently and in collaboration with others and may supervise temporary research staff, such as student workers or interns.

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in the social sciences, higher education, or relevant discipline plus programming or relevant research experience (2 – 4 years) or equivalent skills as demonstrated through previous work experience.


  • Proficiency in data retrieval using reporting tools such as Cognos
  • Proficiency in managing large databases and data sets
  • Strong data presentation skills
  • Knowledge of research methods, including qualitative and quantitative methods, and background in statistics
  • Competence in the use of software for spreadsheets, statistical analysis, and graphics
  • Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects
  • Must be able to work independently in carrying out research and analysis of data, yet must also work effectively with a team of other professionals
  • Flexibility in responding to quickly changing, multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

Other desired qualifications include:

  • Experience with SPSS or other statistical software
  • Experience with Banner data systems
  • Experience with survey research
  • Familiarity with Tableau or other data visualization tools
  • Familiarity with data retrieval using reporting tools such as Cognos
