Job Description:
The Brown Language and Thought Lab, directed by Dr. Roman Feiman, is seeking a full time Lead Research Assistant. The lab conducts research with adults, children, and infants, investigating language comprehension, language acquisition, and conceptual development. The lab will be embedded in a thriving broader research environment: the Department of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences at Brown University, which is a multidisciplinary community that takes complimentary approaches to the study of the mind, brain, behavior, and language. The ideal candidate would be on the path to graduate study in these fields, be intellectually engaged, highly organized, and eager to take on both the academic and administrative challenges of this role.
The Research Assistant’s primary responsibilities will include managing and leading research projects in the lab; designing and preparing stimuli for studies; recruiting and testing infants, children and adults; coding data; assisting with data analysis; and participating in the preparation of research for publications. On the administrative side, responsibilities will include maintaining and improving systems for data and resource management and communication within and outside of the lab, coordinating recruitment and experimental studies with local daycares, preschools, primary schools and families both in-person and online, training and overseeing undergraduate assistants, coordinating the use of space, organizing meetings, purchasing equipment and research supplies, collaborating and coordinating with other developmental laboratories, and assisting with grant management and IRB documentation.
This position is fixed-term, 100% grant-funded position with the possibility of renewal depending on funding.
Education and Experience
- Required: Bachelors of Arts/Science in psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, computer science, cognitive science, or related fields
- Prior experience working in a lab, working with children, and managing others highly desired
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail
- Desire to learn new software programs, with the ability to learn independently
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, Powerpoint is required.
- Experience conducting independent research, (e.g. an honors thesis project, an independent study) is strongly preferred, but not required.
- Experience with eye tracking, and knowledge of R, Python, Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT), CHILDES, CLAN, E-PRIME, Matlab, Filemaker, OSF, and Slack are all preferred but not required.
- Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
