About the Opportunity:
To advance collaboration and consistency across its work on student recruitment, financial aid and student records, Brown University has established a new Enrollment Division that will include its College Admission, Financial Aid and Registrar offices.

Responsibilities:
We seek to fill a new position, the Director of Enrollment Planning and Analysis. The Director is both principal data analyst and strategic adviser to the Associate Provost for Enrollment and assumes leadership and full functional responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and management of the data-related needs of the Enrollment Division. The Director will collaborate closely with partners across the University, including the Office of Institutional Research and Office of Information Technology, as well as staff in the Enrollment Division such as the Registrar’s Office, Office of Financial Aid, Office of College Admission, enrollment systems team, and admissions communications team.  The Director applies advanced knowledge, skills, and understanding of Brown’s institutional goals to research, gather, analyze, and summarize complex and sensitive data related to enrollment in creative and effective ways.

The Director will develop a strategy for enrollment planning and analysis for all undergraduate and graduate academic programs at Brown University, and is responsible for building data models and reports to illustrate historic trends and predict future results. Using expert-level skills in data science, the incumbent will select methods, systems, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results, and work on complex issues requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Examples of high-priority data models and projects include:

  • Managing a predictive enrollment model to forecast enrollment for the upcoming one or two semesters based on individual student attributes and historic probabilities;
  • Developing a long-term enrollment model to predict the number of students enrolled over the next three to five years based on a set of reasonable assumptions;
  • Building admissions models illustrating probabilities for prospects to apply and yield to inform marketing, outreach, and admissions decisions; and
  • Analyzing admitted and enrolled student data to predict financial aid needs based on University policy and known or assumed student attributes.

The incumbent will also provide work direction to professional staff within the Enrollment Division in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating cross-functional department projects and operations related to enrollment data and information systems.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree and 7+ years of experience in data science and analysis for higher education, or equivalent combination of education and experience. A masters or doctoral degree with a strong computational emphasis is preferred.
  • Demonstrated advanced-level statistical knowledge along with experience in data collection and analysis techniques and software platforms.
  • Strong ability to synthesize and summarize complex information in formats appropriate to various audiences.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience with querying languages, such as SQL, used for accessing and manipulating data from databases.
  • Experience with programming languages such as, Python, R, MATLAB, C++, etc.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as PowerBi, Tableau, Dunbas BI, JupyeR, etc.
  • Experience with statistical modeling and classical machine learning techniques (linear regression, logistic regression, decision trees, etc.)
  • Experience with relational databases and data warehouses.
  • Ability to communicate complex, analytical concepts to non-technical, business stakeholders.
  • High professional standards with the ability to manage competing requirements in a diverse user population.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with strong analytical ability.
  • Versatile, enthusiastic and eager to learn new skills.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Experience aligning data definitions with peer standards.
  • Experience with the following Brown data systems a plus: Slate, Banner, Cognos, Tableau.
  • Experience working with undergraduate and/or graduate student enrollment data preferred.
  • Experience in academia or an academic organization.

Job Competencies

  • Advanced skills in data retrieval using Business Intelligence reporting tools such as Cognos.
  • Advanced quantitative skills in data analysis; formal statistical training desirable.
  • Expertise in presenting information, and the ability to articulate complex statistical issues to non-technical audiences, verbally and in writing.
  • Executive-level presentation and communication skills.
  • Project management and change management skills
  • Expertise in database design practices, desktop reporting tools and information display tools.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for broad, critical thinking and high-level problem solving.

  • Strong management and project development skills, ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and work closely with peers.
