About the Opportunity:
Brown University seeks applications and nominations for the Frederic M. Alper Dean of Financial Aid. The Dean leads the University’s comprehensive financial aid program that awards hundreds of millions of dollars annually to undergraduates through the University’s need-blind policies and provides financial support and advising to all undergraduate and graduate students. The University is looking for a new Dean who is a service-oriented leader committed to providing the highest level of support to our students, an exceptional manager of people, and a good steward of institutional funds.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Associate Provost for Enrollment, the Frederic M. Alper Dean of Financial Aid is responsible for managing a team of professionals in the Office of Financial Aid and ensuring compliance for all federal financial aid programs for undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. The Dean of Financial Aid manages and reports on student aid programs for undergraduate and graduate students receiving over $250 million in university scholarships and millions of dollars of grants, scholarships, and loan funds from the federal government, state governments, and outside agencies.

The Dean plays a leadership role in several key areas:

  • Strategy & Policy: Establishing and interpreting policy, setting financial aid criteria, developing strategies and programs to support the University’s enrollment goals for both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Student Service: Ensuring a high quality experience and high level of service for all Brown students.
  • Resource Management: Providing leadership and guidance to ensure the effective use of the University’s financial aid budget and the human resources in the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Operational Excellence: Ensuring efficient and effective financial aid processes through the use of appropriate information systems and technology.
  • University-wide Leadership: Serving as a University leader responsible for reporting on the University’s financial aid programs, policies, budgeting and expenditure forecasts.

Working closely with the Associate Provost and other campus leaders, the Dean establishes effective financial aid policies, practices, and communications strategies, and helps establish Brown as a leader in the national conversation on access and affordability in higher education. The Dean works within the Enrollment Division to ensure that both current and prospective Brown families understand Brown’s affordability and substantial financial aid commitment as they navigate the college process and experience. The Dean also partners with the Office of College Admission, the Registrar’s Office, and individual programs to ensure financial aid communications to students and their families are timed appropriately and coordinated with other communications.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:

  • A minimum of a master’s degree preferably in education, finance, or business administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated record of leadership with a minimum of 10 to 15 years of recent administrative experience related to financial aid at a complex institution of higher education or a comparable organization
  • Experience providing the highest level of services to diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated experience in personnel and financial management, including budget development

Competencies:

  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to simplify and clarify complex processes, and the ability to develop rapport to discuss sensitive and personal information
  • Expert knowledge of policies, practices, regulations, and laws governing financial aid, related student information systems, and military and veteran education benefits
  • Ability to translate business strategy into operational action
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong commitment to promoting institutional diversity
  • Evidence of creative strategic thinking
  • Advanced knowledge of all federal financial aid systems including, but not limited to, NSLDS, CPS, EDconnect and COD
  • Ability to understand the use of data analytics and predictive modeling to enhance enrollment strategies
  • Ability to maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with internal and external colleagues and constituents
