University of Tennessee at Martin — Director of Campus Recreation

The Director of Campus Recreation is responsible for the overall vision, strategic planning, assessment, administration and operation of a comprehensive recreation program.

DUTIES:

Vision and Leadership

  • Provide visionary and strategic leadership, supervision, and management of recreation programs and facilities, including intramural sports, fitness/wellness, facility management, club sports, aquatics, outdoor adventure, informal recreation and special events. 
  • Coordinate the availability of resources necessary for the effective delivery of services and programs. Ensure all functional areas of the Office of Campus Recreation work seamlessly to provide a quality recreational experience. 
  • Develop and monitor activities, policies, and procedures supporting the mission and purpose of the department and university. 
  • Direct the strategic planning process.
  • Coordinate with Physical Plant operations for all projects relating to planning, construction, custodial services, maintenance, and grounds. 
  • Coordinate departmental assessment efforts. 
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the Office of Campus Recreation among internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the department. 
  • Cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with the units of the Division of Student Affairs and other campus partners. 
  • Be visible and actively participant in campus-wide sponsored activities, including weekend and evening events. 
  • Provide service to the university through participation on committees.

Supervision

  • Provide supervision, leadership and mentoring to staff comprised of five (5) full-time professionals, and over 120 student employees.
  • Coordinate staff development training, activities, and retreats.
  • Communicate staff issues or challenges to supervisor.
  • Exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, managing conduct and performance, and approving payroll and work schedules.

Policies and Procedures

  • Annually update policies regarding the administration of the program. (facilities, staff, program manuals, etc.)
  • Direct contract negotiations that include addressing critical issues associated with facility rentals, lease agreements, membership agreements and fee proposals. 
  • Develop and assure compliance with risk management and emergency response plans. 
  • Oversee coordination of systems and timelines dealing with billing, payroll, and other procedures.

Fiscal and Budget Management

  • Oversee a $650,000 budget for the Office of Campus Recreation.
  • Exercise full authority for all departmental budgets, purchase requisitions, capital expenditures and employee payroll. 
  • Ensure that fiscal budget polices are appropriately developed, reviewed, and followed.
  • Develop annual and long-range budgets.
  • Make recommendations regarding membership rates, facility fees, and long-range funding. 
  • Plan and forecast revenue and expenses.
  • Maintain a strong awareness of knowledge of industry standards and trends through engagement in professional organizations and continuing education. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Leadership, or other closely related field.  
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in recreational leadership, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis, human resources and risk management as it relates to programs and services. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple facilities, programs, budgets and staff. 
  • Excellent skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards. 
  • Ability to conduct department wide assessment to evaluate the impact of activities on academic success and overall well-being of students.
  • Exceptional communication skills including the ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively and establish collaborative working relationships with persons from diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels within and outside the university.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience directing recreation programs in a university setting. 
  • Experience in budget management and strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of common policy issues affecting recreation at an institutional level. 
  • Demonstrated skills in use of technology such as Fusion, IRIS, Banner, Runway, etc.
