Director of the Global Portfolio – Associate/Full Specialist Series
The Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS) is recruiting a senior technical expert to serve as Director of the Global Portfolio within IGHS’ Center for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (CPPR) to successfully expand CPPR’s existing programming in public health preparedness, pandemic response, and global health security.
We are seeking highly skilled, passionate, and visionary applicants who can apply their technical acumen and business development experience to develop, grow and sustain this new center. We will prioritize candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our mission as well as our commitment to diversity and excellence. The position will report to the Director of CPPR and will include the expectation of international travel up to 30% of the calendar year.

The Director of the Global Portfolio role will include:
• Provision of technical leadership, support, and assistance in public health preparedness,
strengthening low- and middle-income countries’ (LMIC) systems, strategies, and policies, as well as national and sub-national infectious disease program planning, implementation, and monitoring
• Technical vision and programmatic oversight of a dynamic portfolio of projects and research activities
• Overseeing faculty and affiliate’s involvement and investment in the new center
• Contributing to proposal development, business development, and oversight of strategic growth
and expansion opportunities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Technical Assistance and Research (70%)
• Provide technical assistance to global health projects, including field-based short-term technical
assistance
• Perform various analytic functions which may include business, workflow, and/or statistical
analysis
• Communicate complex technical information to a wide range of non-technical audiences or
constituencies
• Oversee technical aspects of staff performance in the areas Pandemic Preparedness and
Response, including Health System Strengthening, Informatics, Epidemiology, Surveillance, Lab systems, etc.
• Provide direct supervision of senior staff working across projects within CPPR’s globalportfolio
• Interpret and evaluate information to analyze, summarize, and prepare reports
• Contribute to the development and adaptation of existing technical approaches andtools
• Support management of learning around public health preparedness programming, approaches,
and best practices
• Contribute to scholarship through research projects and manuscript development
Business Development and Growth (30%)
• Lead the conceptualization and development of research proposals, concept notes, and
expressions of interest for global health opportunities
• Assist with capture, partner identification and development, and other business development
activities for global health opportunities
• Contribute to design and methodology development aligned with health systems and public
health preparedness best practices
Qualifications:
• Requirements:
o Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or
equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization
o Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent
degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization
o Experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and engaging in strategic
partnerships
o Strong interpersonal skills required for teamwork and interaction with people across
UCSF and with external partners
o Excellent written and oral communications including a record of accomplishment in
original research in population-based or clinical epidemiology, pandemic response or any relevant discipline (e.g. HSS, informatics, lab systems strengthening, surveillance, etc.)
o Experience working in one or more health technical areas: TB; HIV; emerging infectious diseases and global health security; maternal and child health; or integrated health service delivery
o Demonstrated short- or long-term experience working in LMIC context on issues relating to infectious disease prevention and control, health systems strengthening, or disease surveillance
o Demonstrated success raising funds through business and proposal development o A commitment to anticolonial values, DEI, and building a culture that supports and
leverages the unique contributions and experiences of all team members and
stakeholders
o Experience leading, supervising, and managing a team
o Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship
• Strong Preference:
o A minimum of 10 years of experience in applied global public health
o A doctoral-level degree in medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, global
health, or a closely related field
o Extramural funding for research in areas of interest
o Successful track record in business and proposal development to support growth and
impact of the center
Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
