THE POSITION: The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Deputy Director, Division of Blood Diseases and Resources (DBDR). NHLBI is a national and international leader in heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders.  The DBDR Deputy Director position offers an exciting opportunity for scientific and managerial leadership in supporting the overwhelming majority of scientific and clinical hematology research nationwide, from basic biology to clinical research and clinical trials in blood diseases.  The Division has a leading role in applying scientific advances in transfusion medicine and stem cell biology to the development of new therapies, as well as in assuring the adequacy and safety of the Nation’s blood supply.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The NHLBI seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization.  The ideal candidate will be a leader who has demonstrated experience in setting, planning, implementing and analyzing program objectives and priorities and should have the demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources and coordinate a research portfolio involving extensive internal and external collaboration.  They must be a leader who is experienced in giving presentations nationally to broad audiences, including researchers, policy makers, and the general public.  Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. and have senior-level experience and knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to non-neoplastic blood disorders.  Based on the responsibility to assess research needs on a national/international scale and formulate and implement plans for solicitation of new research, the Deputy Director must exhibit a broad scientific vision, demonstrating skill in managing a broad and complex biomedical research program, and the ability to lead and inspire a staff with expertise in diverse scientific disciplines.  The Deputy Director must have a comprehensive understanding of the procedures and policies related to the review, award and management of grants, cooperative agreements and contracts at the NIH, as well as the ability to serve as an authority on the development, implementation, management and analysis of DBDR’s complex annual operating and program budget with multiple funding categories.  Additional major responsibilities of this position include:  liaison with representatives of other NIH Institutes and Centers, federal and non-federal agencies, international research organizations, professional societies, foundations, the media and patient advocacy groups, establishment of research collaborations with not-for-profit organizations and industry partners; and maintenance of a productive work environment meeting EEO workplace diversity, staff professional education and monitoring objectives of the NIH. The successful candidate will be a respected, accomplished leader with maturity, integrity and outstanding communications skills. This is a Title 42 position open for US Citizens and Permanent Resident non-citizens. 

SALARY/BENEFITS: The Deputy Director, DBDR will be appointed at a salary commensurate with their qualifications and experience.  A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid.  Full Federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent) will be provided.  The successful candidate is subject to a background investigation and public financial disclosure report prior to the effective date of the appointment.
