Miami University — Director – Diversity and Outreach Initiatives

Job Summary:

The Director for Diversity and Outreach Initiatives, reporting to the Assistant Vice President and Director of Admission, leads the Office of Admission’s strategic efforts to conceptualize, develop, expand and diversify various enrollment pipelines through innovative partnerships and programs to selectively increase enrollment of diverse students tightly aligned with the University’s mission, including proactive oversight and expansion of agreements with high schools, high school districts, and community-based organizations. The Director serves as a senior member of the Admission Leadership Team and on the Extended Leadership Team for the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Success (EMSS).

This position is approved for remote work on a hybrid basis. Remote work is not a right, but a working arrangement that can be modified or revoked by Miami University at any time for any reason.

Duties/Physical Demands:

  • Develop short and long-term focused, integrated and strategic diversity enrollment plans with a goal of extending the University’s reach to sustain and advance the enrollment of diverse and underrepresented students both in-state and out-of-state, integrating domestic and international, and undergraduate and graduate student populations, as appropriate.   • Miami’s capacity to recruit, select, and enroll underrepresented students.
    Fosters and expands collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders, both within and externally to the institution, to advance Miami’s commitment to actively recruit, admit, and retain the widest array of talented students, nationally and internationally. Works closely with the AVP and Director of Admission to build and advance the University’s brand awareness as one of the top public undergraduate institutions in the U.S.
  • Provide leadership for Office of Admission initiatives designed to recruit, enroll, and retain underrepresented and diverse student populations. This includes leading diversity and outreach committees responsible for implementing strategic diversity and outreach initiatives, developing and coordinating smart, creative, and efficient outreach and diversity travel strategies to stabilize existing markets and grow new markets across the Office of Admission, and primarily related to undergraduate students, and developing and overseeing all associated admission budget lines related to diversity initiatives and outreach.
  • Direct the establishment, successful implementation, and assessment of external programming geared towards underrepresented populations across the Office of Admission; monitor and recommend changes based on the strategy. Programming will include extensive engagement and the purposeful expansion of partnerships with high school districts and community based organizations that will advance the University’s ambitious enrollment goals.
  • Promote organizational and interdisciplinary collaboration among internal and external staff, across EMSS, and offices and departments around the University that will both enhance diversity and retention and ensure continued efforts to build an inclusive culture. This includes participation in the division’s diversity, equity, and inclusion committee and playing an active role in coordinating division and office-wide education and professional development related to improving cultural competency and serving underrepresented populations.
  • The position, in partnership with the AVP and Director of Admission, plays a pivotal advocacy and leadership role on campus, championing and marshaling the necessary resources and support structures to ensure the success of students in underrepresented populations.
  • The position also works closely with the AVP and Director of Admission and the VP of EMSS to strategically leverage the necessary financial aid to meet enrollment goals in alignment with the University’s strategic enrollment plan.
  • Direct the compilation of data and statistics for preparation of reports and projections of statistical data on underrepresented students, in the areas of enrollment and retention; utilize data and research — institutional, state, and national – to make informed decisions.
  • Actively participate in admission and recruitment-related professional organizations and activities.
    Serve on the leadership application review committee and participate in the review process for first-year, transfer, and international students.
  • Serve as a member of the AVP’s senior leadership team and advise supervisor on Ohio, Midwest, and national trends in recruitment issues.
  • Participate in general admission activities (group information sessions, on and off-campus programs, recruitment travel, etc.) as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • More than five years of experience in positions of progressively increasing responsibility in diversity and outreach, enrollment management, higher education, or related field.
  • This position is available to persons who are currently located and authorized to work in the United States on a full-time and indefinite basis. (Persons authorized to work on such a basis include US citizens, lawful permanent residents (“green card” holders), asylees, refugees, and temporary residents under IRCA
  • This position is not eligible for H1-B Visa or OPT support. It is not eligible for PERM sponsorship.

In addition, the director should have the following skills and characteristics: Demonstrated outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Proven analytical and data analysis skills. Strong project management and organizational skills, including ability to set priorities, manage simultaneous initiatives, and operate effectively in a deadline-driven environment. Familiarity with technologies including relational databases highly desired. Commitment to enrolling and employing highly talented and diverse individuals. Ability to work collaboratively.
