Fairfield University — Visiting Assistant Professor, Communication: Sports Media

The Department of Communication at Fairfield University’s College of Arts and Sciences is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor in the area of Sports Media to begin September 2022. Specifically, we seek a teacher-scholar of Communication Studies who can instruct a variety of courses related to media and sports communication. Specialties in media studies and critical sports studies preferred. The new faculty member should enhance our offerings in the study of sports and media as they relate to issues of social justice—such as race, gender, sexuality, and activism, among others. Applicants should hold a PhD in Communication. In line with our University’s mission, social justice should be emphasized in teaching and/or research.

The Department of Communication offers three undergraduate degrees in Communication, Public Relations, and Sports Media. The Department also offers a 36-hour MA degree. The undergraduate program is among the largest in the College of Arts and Sciences. The program is delivered by eleven tenured and tenure track faculty and Professor of Practice.

We are looking for a visionary candidate who can blend theory with practice for our students. PayScale highlighted that our Communication graduates are the #9 highest paid in the country, at both early and mid-career (as highlighted in the November 2019 edition of NCA’s Spectra). Many of our students complete internships for credit both locally and in NYC.

The University is located roughly 50 miles from New York City, making it an ideal scholarly environment to blend theory, research, and application. Importantly, our proximity to global Sports Media outlets make our location ideal for Sports Media researchers.
