Job Description:

The Research Assistant will provide assistance with neurophysiological, imaging and molecular biology experiments in the developing visual system of tadpoles. This position involves assisting with basic lab maintenance and organization. This position involves use of various experimental techniques and utilize molecular biology techniques, animal husbandry, histology, computers, and microscopy techniques.

The long-term goal of the research in the laboratory of Dr. Carlos Aizenman is to understand the role of sensory experience in shaping the connectivity and functional properties of developing neural circuits, as well as its implications for neurodevelopmental disorders. The lab focuses on the visual system of Xenopus laevis tadpoles; a preparation amenable to a variety of experimental approaches, ranging from molecular biology, single-cell electrophysiology, live cell imaging, computational modeling, and behavior.

This is a fixed term position that ends two years from the start date, and can be extended depending on funding availability.

QUALIFICATIONS –

Grade 7:
Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree (molecular or cell biology background preferred) and undergraduate research experience or extensive coursework.
  • Experience in providing technical support for laboratory personnel preferred.
  • Experience in coordinating the maintenance and organization of the laboratory research activities preferred.

  • Ability to communicate reliably and effectively.
  • A Ability to work independently and to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people, with vastly different skills and training.
  • Must be strongly supportive of the use of animals for appropriate biomedical research.
  • There are potential health risks to be aware of when working in a lab , position requires a candidate willing to follow all safety procedures and regulations and keep up to date on required laboratory safety training.
  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Grade 8:
Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years’ relevant post-graduate laboratory experience.
  • Experience in providing technical support for laboratory personnel preferred.
  • Experience in coordinating the maintenance and organization of the laboratory research activities preferred.
