Job Description:

The Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology is seeking a highly motivated individual to work closely with the principal investigator (PI) in performing and optimizing methods to detect emerging viruses and investigate viral sequence diversity. The primary responsibilities of this role will involve performing assays including RNA/DNA isolation, qPCR, preparation of sequencing libraries and sequencing across a range of platforms, with opportunities to develop independence in experimental design, analysis and interpretation. The position will also assist with the set-up and routine operations of the wet lab including, including ordering, inventory and equipment management.

The lab of Dr Katie Siddle is a new group within the department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Brown University that develops and applies genomic approaches to study the epidemiology, evolution and pathogenesis of viral pathogens. This position will be part of several highly collaborative research projects involving US-based and international partners working at the intersection of pathogen genomics and global health. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be integral to the establishment of a new lab with potential for professional development opportunities.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one year from hire , which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications

Grade 7
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with prior related experience or extensive coursework required
  • And/or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Prior experience with viral pathogens, RNA handling and/or sequencing is preferred

 Job Competencies

  • Interest in scientific research, including development of new methods
  • Ability to perform standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. nucleic acid extraction, PCR)
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, record keeping, and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated initiative, and ability to independently problem-solve
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Understanding of and willingness to uphold good safety practices and clean laboratory procedures
  • Proficiency with computers and essential software programs (e.g. MS office, Google Suite, etc.)
  • Ability to work with human samples (e.g. blood), including those known or suspected to contain pathogens under appropriate biosafety containment
  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive community
