Job Description:
The Medical Image Scientist will participate independently and as a member of a research team in obtaining, pre-processing, analyzing, and visualization of imaging data as part of the Center for Statistical Sciences studies under the direction of faculty and senior Biostatisticians. In particular, the Medical Image Scientist will download, organize, and pre-process large imaging databases, and support faculty and students in analyzing the images to obtain longitudinal biomarkers for various patient populations, with an emphasis on cancer and Alzheimer’s disease research. The Medical Image Scientist will be responsible for programming efforts related to image analysis and may be asked to participate in writing efforts. The Medical Image Scientist plays a key role in the development and production of study results and data visualizations and will participate in Group-wide and study-specific conference calls. This position works with and analyzes confidential and human subject data and, as such, requires the incumbent to maintain an up-to-date Protection of Human Research Subjects certification through the Brown University Research Protections Office.
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in computer science, Biomedical Engineering or a related field with experience working in the area of image processing and visualization or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 1-3 years of experience with implementing methods for analysis of imaging data.
Job Competencies
- Experience with image processing, image formats (DICOM, JPG, PNG, etc.), DICOM Data, and associated processing tools and software (DICOM viewers, R, etc).
- Experience implementing and familiarity with standard image processing software and methods is required.
- Experience with implementing methods for analysis of imaging data.
- At least 1 year of experience in image processing, preferred.
- Familiarity with data maintenance and manipulation (variable creation, data cleaning, etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to work effectively on multiple projects at the same time and learn complex technical concepts.
- Proficiency in a major statistical software package (R, SAS, or related software) is desirable. Experience computing in both a Windows and UNIX environment is also desirable.
