Job Description:
The Medical Director of Sports Medicine is the principal supervisor and coordinator for the medical team in Athletics. The position consists of primarily providing and supervising medical care to student athletes in addition to the general student population with the goals of emphasizing health, injury prevention and recovery, ensuring safety and minimizing risks with return to sport/activity. The supervisory role consists of clinically supporting and guiding athletic training staff, physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Lastly, the position allows for opportunities to initiate and modify policies and procedures to reflect the most current evidence-based practices in the care and promotion of college students’ well-being.
The Medical Director of Sports Medicine is also a staff physician and an integral member of the health care team of Health Services serving the diverse, global student population at Brown. As a member of the primary care practice at Health Services, this position also provides patient centered primary care to undergraduate, graduate, medical and pre-college students. In addition, this position participates as a supervisor and consultant to Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants at Health Services as requested. Other administrative duties include participation in Quality Improvement activities and other duties assigned to support the achievement of the mission and goals of Brown Athletics and Health Services.
For this dual appointment position, the Medical Director of Sports Medicine will report to the Clinical Director of Health Services for all medical care and Assistant VP for Athletics and Recreation, Governance and Performance for administrative responsibilities.
Job Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) Degree.
- Fellowship or specialty training in Sports Medicine or Primary Care Orthopedics.
- Current or eligible for Rhode Island Medical License and DEA license prior to appointment.
- Board Certification in primary care specialty (internal medicine, pediatrics or family medicine).
- Two or more years of demonstrated post residency experience in ambulatory primary care or two-year fellowship in adolescent medicine preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with parents, staff, and others.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to work in and support a diverse and inclusive environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work with computers including experience with electronic health records, email, and word processing.
- Experience working with higher education population, experience in office gynecology, experience in office orthopedics and experience or training in sports medicine preferred.
