The IT Communications Manager is a professional responsible for developing strategic communications and messaging for the Brown University Office of Information Technology (OIT). The IT Communications Manager manages the storytelling and engagement about IT services supporting faculty, students, and staff.  They work in partnership with OIT service owners and leadership, other IT stakeholders, and campus partners to plan and produce the division’s technology messaging, using a number of approaches. Their mission is to help OIT increase customer success and improve service delivery, through widespread and effective engagement with the Brown community.

This role is responsible for strategy, planning and operations for diverse communication channels, including OIT’s external and internal organizational websites and digital handbooks, the IT service catalog and knowledgebase, email campaigns, digital signage, interactions with campus groups, customer and organizational surveys, and our OIT annual report.

Major responsibilities include of the position include developing strategy and providing operations for outward-facing IT communications; developing strategy and providing operations for IT service knowledge management; managing internal OIT organizational communications and ensuring professional standards; and leading OIT customer engagement to providing actionable feedback and analytics.

This is a key role in the Office of Information Technology, and has a major impact on the successful use of technology in teaching, learning, research, service, and administrative work at Brown University. This position is occasionally expected to work outside of normal business hours during peak periods including occasional University-scale events, major service launch dates, and unplanned critical outages.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of related experience managing and delivering communications.
  • Experience with current and emerging technologies.
  • Experience that demonstrates exemplary judgment and confidentiality when required.
  • Experience in an institution of higher education and/or a technology organization preferred.
  • Demonstrated technical writing and design skills, and a track record of implementing creative content and communication strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience with survey tools, analytics, and engagement practices for measuring success of communication efforts.
  • Demonstrated capacity to take complex technical issues and make them understandable to lay audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as a member and leader of a team.
  • Proficiency with HTML, CSS, Javascript, web content management systems, visual design and layout software.
  • Experience in managing social media presence for an organization.
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, speaking, writing, and designing).
  • Accuracy in grammar and spelling, with knowledge of AP, Chicago or MLA writing standards preferred.
  • Ability to think proactively and manage multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in and lead team environments across a diverse set of projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Service and delivery mindset.
  • Excellent skills in customer service and customer relations.
  • Excellent problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
  • Demonstrated service-first orientation, with a focus on service quality and continuous improvement.
