Summary:
William Paterson University invites applications for the appointment of a Fellow in the College of Education, Department of Teacher Education: PreK-12. This two-year teaching fellowship is open to candidates from unrepresented backgrounds who are pursuing a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction or a related field.

The College of Education will support the Fellow through a structured program of focused research, experiential pedagogy, and an introduction to university and professional service.

William Paterson University pre-doctoral fellowship program will support three non-tenure track fellowship positions across the University. The goals of the program are to (a) support the career success of selected candidates, (b) advance the University's commitment to building a diverse campus community, and (c) expand the University's pool of highly qualified candidates for faculty positions. Fellows will gain supported teaching experience on a highly diverse campus, be provided individualized mentorship, and receive the same level of scholarship support and course release as first and second year tenure-track faculty members. A recommendation to convert the fellowship to a tenure-track faculty line may be considered after the end of the first year if the candidate has completed the terminal degree and the department and Fellow agree.

Department overview

The Department of Teacher Education: PreK-12 offers 7 undergraduate and 9 graduate programs, a total of 16 programs. This wide breadth of undergraduate and graduate programs reflects the many variations of state teacher certification that students can earn through our majors and programs. Programs and coursework are designed to link the study of current research and best practices to improving outcomes for all students in P-12 public schools. Issues of inclusion, equity, and social justice are interwoven throughout. Courses are offered on campus, in the field, online, and in hybrid format.

The acute teacher shortage has increased demand for teacher preparation programs that bring candidates into the field more rapidly and build upon existing experiences. As a result, alternate route post-baccalaureate programs allow a candidate to serve as the teacher of record while obtaining certification. At the undergraduate level, working early childhood paraprofessionals have a route to certification without leaving their positions. Timeline for the fall 2023 fellowship cohort:

  • Thursday, February 9, 2023: Applications due for priority consideration.
  • Thursday-Friday, April 13-14, 2021: Virtual campus visit and interviews. Details to follow.

Fellowship offers are anticipated by the end of April 2023 with appointments beginning August 2023.

Duties:
Fellowship duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Teaching:

  • Teach a total of 18 graduate and/or undergraduate credits annually in online, hybrid or face-to-face modalities per departmental needs; Collaborate with faculty through tailored mentorship.
  • Using the course outline as a guide, develop relevant syllabi in order to deploy course content, objectives, and methods of student assessment.
  • Contribute to student success of a diverse student population by providing consistent and effective support and guidance through role modeling, mentoring, and being available to respond to student questions and needs.

Scholarship:

  • A strong commitment to establishing a research program involving undergraduates and graduate students.
  • A continued dedication to be involved in research and scholarship and disseminate in quality research publications, external and internal grant submissions; Collaborate with faculty through tailored mentorship.

Service:

  • Participate in the variety of service opportunities within the department, college, and university community including mentoring students where appropriate.
  • Engage in assessment of student learning as well as program and accreditation assessment and reporting requirements.
  • Attend department and college meetings and engage in activities of the department.
  • Enhance the University's engagement with the community at-large by working with under-represented groups within the University's geographic area.

Qualifications:
Qualifications – the ideal candidate must have the following qualifications:

  • Identifies as a member of an underrepresented population (by race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic background, first-generation college, etc.)
  • ABD in a doctoral program in curriculum and instruction or a related field
  • Evidence or promise of research in scholarly activity with commitment to establishing a research program involving undergraduate and graduate students
  • Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion concepts and their applicability to the field of teaching and learning.

Additional, preferred qualifications:

  • Teaching experience in P-12, with preference given to early childhood or secondary education.
  • Expertise in curriculum design and assessment of learning.
  • Experience in collaborating with P-12 communities.

  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a collaborative environment by freely offering expertise and being open to meaningful feedback.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence and supporting student success.
  • Capable of engaging and contributing in order to make a positive impact.
