Three African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to Dean Positions

Gary Edwards is the new vice president and dean of students at Talladega College in Alabama. He was dean of students at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. Earlier, Dr. Edwards served as executive director of student leadership and academic success initiatives at Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Edwards earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Voorhees University in Denmark, South Carolina. He holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Alabama A&M University and a doctorate in educational leadership and professional practice from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.

Kevin Hamilton was appointed associate vice chancellor and dean of student belonging at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, effective February 6. He most recently served as associate dean of students for housing and residence life and civic engagement at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Earlier, Dr. Hamilton held administrative positions at the University of Central Arkansas and Texas Tech University.

Dr. Hamilton is a graduate of Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas, where he majored in communication. He holds a master’s degree in college student personnel and a doctorate in higher education leadership from Azusa Pacific University in California.

Danelle Stevens-Watkins was named acting dean of the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. She is the first woman of color to serve in this role for the College of Education. Dr. Stevens-Watkins is a professor in the department of educational, school, and counseling psychology, as well as the university’s associate vice president for research, diversity, and inclusion.

Dr. Stevens-Watkins is a graduate of the University of Louisville, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Spalding University in Louisville and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Kentucky.
