Job Description:

Reporting to the Vice President for Campus Life, the Senior Director for Student Success and Chief of Staff serves on the senior leadership team for the leadership division responsible for the student experience for all students – supporting them and ensuring their personal success. The Division is comprised of 19 offices, departments and centers and more than 200 continuing staff and 850 student staff providing a broad range of student-centered programs and resources for undergraduate, graduate and medical school students and in many cases staff and faculty.

Charged with positioning Brown as a national leader, this position will oversee three critical areas of the work for the division: 1) structuring and leading department- and division-level assessment especially related to division- and department-level strategic indicators measuring outcomes, impact and progress to ensure student success and department-level reviews in coordination with other leaders; 2) leading high-level division wide strategic areas of work (projects, processes, and initiatives) and reports/reporting (both existing and emergent) critical to the division and institution goal of operational excellence as the representative of the Vice President; 3) providing centralized leadership at the most senior level for the expanding role of Campus Life related to the graduate student experience with particular attention to vision, structure, and current and emergent resource needs.

These are critical areas for the division moving forward and will require a senior leader with significant experience building new and maintaining existing programs and initiatives, creating vision and coordinated engagement and accountability, identifying resource needs and resource management, and a leadership track record of working with data and assessment related to student success and the student experience.

As a key member of the senior leadership team and advisor to the Vice President for Campus Life, this position has a range of leadership responsibilities related to institutional and divisional committees and working groups. As designated, this position represents the Vice President of Campus Life and serves on their behalf at meetings, conferences, and other related events and activities. This position also will lead efforts related to key University level committees including, but not limited to the Campus Life Committee of the Corporation and the Campus Life Advisory Board.

Job Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a discipline related to higher education required; Ph.D. or Ed.D. strongly desired.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of administrative experience in higher education with progressively more leadership responsibility.
  • Proven track record of identifying and addressing complex challenges and empowering operational excellence and organizational change consistent with the mission of the division and institution.
  • Experience with assessment related to the student success and experience – both qualitative or quantitative – as either the primary deliverer of assessment efforts and or coordinator of external assessment resources.
  • Strong understanding of and experience with current good practices in assessment in higher education that supports the development of consistent and progressive methods of outcomes assessment.
  • Ability to articulate and implement a vision for strengthening the student experience, including diversity and cultural competence, that is consistent with the mission of the Division and the University.
  • Broad expertise with current best thinking and work in higher education with an awareness of emerging opportunities and challenges in higher education.
  • Proven track record building and leading innovative new initiatives and programs by holding participants accountable to clear processes and practices.
  • Proven track record as a consensus builder who can foster relationships and move forward collaborative projects and areas of work with clear goals and outcomes.
  • Proven track record of support and advocacy for students and colleagues from diverse identities, histories, backgrounds, and experiences as well as for building the capacity among colleagues to do this work.
  • Proven track record of effective developmental supervision and mentoring of entry as well as experienced level staff.
  • Experience working with partners including but not limited to academic affairs, advancement, equity and inclusion, alumni affairs, and boards of trustees.
  • Track record of integrity, reasoned judgment, humility, adaptability, and the ability to make and explain challenging decisions.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
