Junior Faculty Position in Black Experiences in Engineering
University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: JPF08064

Building upon its commitment to foster an inclusive environment and promote the success of underrepresented students, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS) and the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies invite applications for an open Assistant Professor position to begin on July 1, 2023. We welcome applications from outstanding candidates in any subfield of engineering whose research, teaching, and/or mentoring has strong ties to Black experiences in the United States. The successful candidate will be expected to advance their active mentoring activities and participate in programs that provide research and professional development opportunities for our Black student body, such as our Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity (CEED) and National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Applicants should exhibit promise in developing and maintaining an extramurally supported research program, publishing and disseminating research findings, and serving as leaders at the forefront of their field. Teaching and service expectations will not exceed those of other faculty positions.

This faculty search is a partnership between Samueli Engineering and the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, as part of the campus-wide effort to rise to the challenge of racial and social justice at UCLA, sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor and the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost.
Faculty hired through this search are expected to maintain an active affiliation to the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies and encourage the success of Black and first generation scholars.

UCLA and the Samueli Engineering are firmly committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Therefore, we ask each applicant to submit a statement that addresses their past efforts and future plans to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in their scholarship, teaching, and service. The application should include a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, Reference Check authorization release form, the aforementioned diversity statement, evidence of teaching excellence, and a list of references. Letters of recommendation will be solicited from references following an initial screening review. To ensure full consideration, the application should be completed online through by January 15, 2023. After the initial review data, new applications will be considered only at the discretion of the search committee.

Applicants must have an earned PhD in a field related to one of the Engineering Departments: Bioengineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computational Medicine, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The faculty appointment will be made to a particular Department within HSSEAS, as appropriate to the candidate's research background and interests.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists' current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
