Departmental Overview

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) serves as the campuswide hub for supporting and engaging ladder and non-ladder faculty in efforts to enhance teaching and learning effectiveness and innovation. The CTL is committed to advancing student-centered learning campus-wide through equitable and inclusive pedagogy that is grounded in research-based strategies. In doing so, the CTL collaborates with campus educators to inspire and enrich Berkeley’s collective teaching and learning community.

The CTL is housed in the Research, Teaching and Learning (RTL) organization under the Division of Undergraduate Education and reports to the Chief Academic Technology Officer and Assistant Vice Provost. In addition to administering major campus-wide programs in support of advancing student-centered teaching and learning, the CTL serves broadly as a campus change agent for teaching and learning.

Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced pedagogical expertise, faculty development concepts, and knowledge of campus strategic objectives to identify needs and to design, implement, and assess programming and services for ladder and non-ladder faculty across all disciplines and at all stages of career development to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Collaboratively design, develop, and facilitate workshops, intensives, seminars, brown bags, and communities in face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online contexts as related to course design, development, and facilitation.
  • Engage in a diverse environment with relevant senior faculty, administrators, staff colleagues, and other academic support units to identify and to address campus-wide faculty development needs related to creating an inclusive, equitable, and accessible learning environment.
  • Provide direct instructional design consultation and classroom observation to faculty to support syllabus and assignment design, determine appropriate methods for delivery of course content, including effective use of technology, and address common classroom challenges.
  • May provide professional development guidance to other staff members, other campus units, and/or project team participants.
  • Research and evaluate new developments with Universal Design for Learning (UDL), considering how connections to disability justice and culturally responsive teaching can be advanced through higher education pedagogy. Advise on new developments, materials, and techniques for leveraging UDL to implement culturally sustaining pedagogies.
  • Collaborate with content experts, instructional designers, multimedia specialists, instructional technologists, instructional librarians, learning management system specialists, disability support specialists, and other relevant campus partners to expand the use of UDL in course design and development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Digital Learning Services and Learning Environments and Tools, two teams within RTL that provide online course development and educational technology support, to stay current on online resources available to faculty and how they could be used on a larger campus UDL strategy.
  • Create learning materials dedicated to advancing instructors’ understandings of the tools, principles, and practices that leverage UDL to develop culturally responsive teaching experiences.
  • Develop communications planning and strategy to share information about UDL with ladder and non-ladder faculty.
  • Coordinate with the staff and faculty in Berkeley Discovery to support faculty projects related to implementing UDL.
  • Develop digital resources (video exemplars, templates, blog posts, articles, podcasts, etc.) to share on the CTL website to create self-paced learning content for faculty and staff audiences.
  • Engage in professional development to stay abreast of learning theories, pedagogies, and technological developments.
  • Participate and present in local, state, regional, and national professional associations, conferences, and committees.
  • Participate in and lead outreach efforts to cultivate a campus culture committed to understanding and advancing UDL.

Required Qualifications

  • Expertise in curriculum design, inclusive pedagogy theory, and practice, active learning frameworks, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Advanced ability to conduct analysis, develop recommendations, and solve problems.
  • Knowledgeable about current and emerging trends, issues, and best practices in faculty development and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Familiarity with the literature on inclusive and equity-focused teaching practices.
  • Deep understanding of the academic culture of a public research university.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and/or confidential situations with diplomacy and tact.
  • Demonstrated experience designing asynchronous and synchronous online experiences that incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Comfort working in a flexible and collaborative environment.
  • 2 or more years of teaching experience as an instructor of record.
  • 2 or more years of educational development experience working with ladder and/or non-ladder faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and/or graduate students.
  • Background or relevant experience working in instructional design or in applying UDL principles in educational settings, such as K-12, community college, or four-year college and university settings.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with advancing culturally responsive pedagogy in a teaching and learning environment (e.g., consultations on teaching and learning, workshops, faculty group programs, developing resources, etc.).
  • Demonstrated engagement with research in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated success in developing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives focused on teaching and learning.
  • Experience partnering with or working at an established, college-level center for teaching and learning

Education/Training:

  • Master’s Degree in any academic discipline and/or related experience or training.

Salary & Benefits

  • This is a full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly. The annual salary for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $80,000.00 – $90,000.00.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for 60% remote capability.
