University of Alabama — Department Chair, Advertising + Public Relations

The College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama seeks a chair to oversee the administration of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations.

The chair will help shape the research, teaching, creative activity, and service efforts for one of the nation’s leading advertising and public relations departments, which comprises 28 full-time faculty members teaching 1,165 undergraduate and graduate students.  The department has a faculty of eminent scholars, teachers, and advertising and PR professionals with national and international reputations in a variety of academic and professional interests, including media effects, public opinion, history, law, ethics, sports, nonprofits, internal communication, and digital communication.

The department seeks a leader who will empower the faculty to prepare highly-competent, socially-conscious, and engaged leaders who will shape the future of global advertising and public relations. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to collaborative decision-making and faculty governance that will foster and promote a diverse and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, and students. The successful candidate will articulate the department’s vision and strategic direction to college, university, and industry leaders. Finally, the successful candidate will be a scholar who will successfully contribute to the department’s research and creative activity profile beyond her or his term as chair.

About the Department of Advertising and Public Relations
The undergraduate program is ACEJMC-accredited, and houses one of the one of the largest advertising and PR student populations in the country, with 758 public relations majors and 329 advertising majors. Public Relations majors have the option of a general or Digital Communications concentration.  Advertising majors have four options: a general major or a concentration in Brand Management, Creative Advertising, or Integrated Channel Planning. The graduate program, with 78 students, awards a Master of Arts in Advertising and Public Relations. The two-year residential program offers an individualized track and more specialized concentrations in Advertising Creative and Media Strategy. The graduate program also offers distance-learning concentrations in Digital Communication and Marketing Communication Management.

The department is consistently noted by PRWeek magazine as one of the top five programs in the country. Students gain extensive practical experience prior to graduation through multiple outlets, including work with industry clients such as NASCAR, the Country Music Association, McLaren Automotive, Twitch and Tervis. The department is also home to the award-winning, student-run PR firm, Capstone Agency. 

About the College of Communication and Information Sciences
The Department of Advertising and Public Relations is one of four academic units in the College of Communication & Information Sciences.  The college has 97 full-time faculty members serving 2,473 undergraduate and 706 graduate students, including 82 students in the college-wide Ph.D. program, in which the Department of Advertising and Public Relations actively participates. The college’s facilities include The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations; the Public Opinion Lab, housed within the Institute for Communication and Information Research; and the College’s 50,000 square-foot Digital Media Center, which is home to the Center for Public Television, Alabama Public Radio, and WVUA 23, a full-power commercial television station serving a top-50 television market.  The university, college, and departments are fully accredited.

Application Requirements
A Ph.D. in communication or a closely related field is required. Candidates should be at the professor or advanced associate professor rank and have the academic credentials and professional reputation that warrant a senior-level appointment at a major research institution. Candidates should have a distinguished record of research, college-level administrative experience, evidence of teaching excellence, and professional experience. The search is open with respect to subfield specialization. The successful candidate would be appointed to the permanent faculty and would serve as chair for an initial term of three years.  Salary will be competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.
