About the Opportunity:
The Robert J. & Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science is committed to supporting research and facilitating collaborations in brain science across the Brown University community and beyond. Responsibilities:
The Scientific Communications Specialist independently develops internal and external communications and manages stakeholder engagement for the Carney Institute for Brain Science and all centers within in collaboration with their supervisor and the Institute’s leadership team. The incumbent independently manages a broad and fast-paced communications portfolio focused on elevating the profile and impact of the Carney Institute, including the following primary responsibilities: developing communications and marketing materials; managing website content and social media platforms; leading efforts to engage stakeholders; supporting communications for donor proposals and stewardship; and supporting engagement with and responses to media.

The Specialist will create engaging short- and long-form video content effectively highlighting the Institute’s research, teaching, and outreach efforts for internal and external stakeholders including all elements of production. The incumbent leverages strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills across a range of Carney communications, as well as a strong ability to appropriately translate scientific concepts into content for public and non-technical audiences.

The incumbent collaborates closely with leadership and faculty in the Carney Institute along with stakeholders in the Office of University Communications and the Division of Advancement. The incumbent is a trusted member of a collaborative administrative team working toward Institute goals and priorities. The incumbent will network with other communications professionals across Brown and its affiliated hospitals to foster collaboration and to keep abreast of best practices and messaging strategy. This position handles confidential information and is expected to maintain and secure privacy.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public affairs, or a related field is required. (education or a degree in science and experience in communications is a plus).
  • Degree in science or significant number of undergraduate level courses in science preferred.
  • 3-5 years related professional experience in marketing, communications, development and outreach, or equivalent combination of education and work experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in conceiving and producing strong visual stories through video.
  • Interest and some experience in communicating life sciences required.
  • Higher education or non-profit work experience is preferred.

Job Competencies

  • Demonstrated strong written communication and presentation skills with special attention to detail/accuracy and audience.
  • Ability to translate scientific content and concepts into language for a lay or non-technical audience.
  • Ability to translate information from first-hand interviews with scientists into exciting, accessible language for a lay or non-technical audience.
  • Knowledge and command of evolving social media platforms.
  • Ability to produce and edit video to clearly and concisely convey messages that align with client needs
  • Ability to organize and keep track of large amounts of media.
  • Knowledge of copyright, image permissions and fair use protocols for music and video resources supporting production.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to sustain a high level of productivity and work independently while being part of a collaborative team.
  • Sound judgment, discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including strong command of MLA, Chicago and/or AP editorial style.
  • Flexibility in adjusting to changing demands.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Web-based programs and tools, Gmail and related Google applications, and related systems.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, InDesign and Premier, and the capacity to manage design vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

Salary Grade: 9
