Job Description:

The Office of the General Counsel (“OGC”) at Brown University is offering a unique summer opportunity to a highly motivated second year law student who thrives in a team-oriented, fast-paced, and enjoyable work environment. The OGC is recruiting a summer Law Intern to work in its office located in the Jewelry District in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The Law Intern will work closely with OGC attorneys and staff and experience the responsibilities of a university general counsel’s office.  The Law Intern will also learn about departmental and University functions, and will have opportunities to network with others at the University. The Law Intern must have excellent legal research, writing and computer skills and have an interest in higher education legal issues.

This is a paid, full-time position for up to 10 weeks (June through August).   This position is a temporary summer position, not eligible for Brown benefits.

Major Responsibilities:
Performing legal research and writing.
Supporting Actions:
The Law Intern will work under supervision of the attorneys and have the opportunity to attend meetings and, depending on circumstances, hearings and other legal proceedings.

Conduct legal research and writing, interpret federal and state laws, and analyze various legal issues.  Support projects within the OGC.

Support OGC attorneys in various legal matters.
Supporting Actions:
Work on litigation matters and legal issues in the following areas:  labor and employment, academic and student affairs, campus life, Title IX, athletics, risk management and insurance, contracts and research and intellectual property.

Draft policies/procedures.
Supporting Actions:
Draft policies, standard operating procedures, checklists and forms for compliance purposes.

Assist in creating content for OGC legal trainings and the OGC website.
Supporting Actions:
Assist OGC attorneys with design and creation of content for various OGC legal trainings/topics, OGC newsletters and revision of OGC website.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school; 2L student preferred, but 1Ls encouraged to apply.
