Brown University — Electronics Technician

Job Description:
The Electronics Technician maintains and repairs research-grade electronic scientific instruments for the Department of Chemistry at Brown University.  The incumbent must be capable of designing and fabricating analog and digital electronic circuits, including opamp amplifiers, passive and active filter circuits, transistor, FET, MOSFET, amplifier and switching circuits, and PCB design and installation, which support both the research and teaching mission of the department.

The position maintains and stocks a design and repair shop for electronic devices in support of faculty and student research, and the instructional needs of the department.  This position is a member of the Chemistry staff but may, as warranted, collaborate on the electronic aspects of research projects with students and faculty in other physical science departments within the University.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2-4 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and  experience.  Experience in higher education or research preferred.

Job Competencies

  • Ability to build, assemble, repair, and replace electronic parts.
  • Knowledge of current electronic technology, as well as mechanical aptitude.
  • Computer technology skills (software and hardware), including troubleshooting and repair, when necessary.
  • Working knowledge of physics, mathematics, and circuit design are helpful.
  • Familiarity with relay logic circuits, programmable logic controllers, HMIs, microcontrollers, fast timing electronics, sensitive preamplifiers and phase-sensitive detection methods.
  • Should be comfortable working with 115 VAC/single phase, 220 VAC/single phase, and 220 VAC/3-Phase and with high voltage (1- 10 KVDC) power supplies and electric and magnetic fields.
  • Must be able to work independently and take direction from several people at once.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
