Brown University — Athletics Chief of Staff

Job Description:

Brown University Athletics is currently seeking candidates for the Athletics Chief of Staff position.  Located in Providence, Rhode Island, and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 34 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-D1).

The Chief of Staff provides leadership over the executive operations and execution of the strategic and operational plans within the Division of Athletics and Recreation.  This role manages the daily operations of the Office of the Vice President and Division, and develop, implement, and oversee the Division’s key relationships to expand engagement within the local Providence community.  The Chief of Staff will work closely with marketing and promotions, group ticket sales, community engagement, Learfield/Brown Bears Sports Properties, and University Government and Community Relations to cultivate relationships with the Providence community.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage student-athlete related issues, advise on priorities, and coordinate meetings as requested and on behalf of the Vice President for Athletics and Recreation and the executive leadership team.
  • Collaborate across the Student-Athlete Development unit and several University partners (e.g., Student Conduct & Community Standards) to appropriately respond on behalf of the Division.
  • Serve as the liaison to the Brown University Alumni Association and develop new initiatives and programs to engage alumni with the Division.  This includes oversight of invitations and other correspondence to key alumni, assist with planning alumni functions, and welcome and greet visiting alumni. Also includes close collaboration with the Student-Athlete Development unit to engage alumni with current student-athletes (e.g., career & professional networking programs/collaboration with Brown Connect, etc.).
  • Oversee the implementation and execution of the Division’s 5-year strategic and operational plans.  Includes assisting unit heads with developing metrics and key performance indicators and tracking annual progress.
  • Serve as the program administrator for select varsity sports.  As needed, the position will also assist with Head Coach searches and provide leadership with onboarding new coaching staff members.
  • Serves as a member of the senior leadership team and represents the Division at various meetings, committees, and task forces on campus and in the local community.
  • Provide leadership and oversee the Associate AD for Administration & Executive Operations and Executive Operations Coordinator to support the Vice President for Athletics and Recreation as well as the other members of the executive leadership team.

Job Qualifications 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience

Experience and Job Competencies

  • Seven to 10 years of progressive athletic administration experience required
  • Prior experience in the higher education setting or similarly complex organization is required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Tactful, direct, and demonstrated ability to present data and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to effectively influence policies and programs
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated track record of building and maintaining strong relationships
  • Strong commitment to supporting the University’s goals of cultivating a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines; flexible in dealing with changes in approach and deliverables.
  • Strong systems skills, including Microsoft Office suite, database, and resource planning systems.
  • Demonstrated an aptitude for team building, change management, and process development skills.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.

All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA and Ivy League rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division are to be reported to the appropriate parties.  Employees in coaching positions are required to pass the NCAA Coaches Certification Test, maintain current AED/CPR & First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Division), and attend all required divisional and/or NCAA training/education programs.
