ABOUT THE POSITION:
Brown University’s Pre-College Programs is a leader in the field of higher education institutions that provide rigorous academic opportunities to students, and experiential learning through on-site engagement and living and learning among peers from diverse backgrounds. Each summer, these Pre-College programs offer students over ten different programs from which to select over 300 non-credit courses that range in length from 1 to 6 weeks, as well as credit-bearing seven-week courses learning alongside Brown undergraduates. The approximately 6000 pre-college students each summer hail from all 50 states in the U.S. and over 70 countries. They come to study a wide range of liberal arts subjects that reflect the breadth of Brown’s undergraduate open curriculum. These courses are taught by approximately 500 instructors who are Brown faculty, post-docs, staff, and graduate students, and who are hired, trained, and supported by pre-college Program Directors with support from colleagues across the University.

The Assistant Director reports to the Assistant Dean for Pre-College Programs and is a member of the Program Director Team within the Division. This team focuses on academic program and curriculum development, instructor recruitment and support, and academic processes and policies.

Several of the summer pre-college programs and courses are offered online, including Summer@Brown Online and Leadership Institute Online, as well as a growing number of online learning initiatives occurring throughout the year. The Assistant Director works with the Assistant Dean to lead and oversee these programs and courses to ensure alignment with the University’s educational excellence and reflect best practices for online teaching and learning. In addition, the Assistant Director manages the instructional support lifecycle for Summer@Brown humanities courses. This includes, but is not limited to, recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of instructional support staff. Lastly, the Assistant Director contributes to the ongoing strategic development of the Division and leadership in daily administrative activities.

Additionally, understanding the needs and interests of high-achieving university-bound students is key to ensuring excellent programs that continue to evolve and grow each year.

Major responsibilities includes:

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Pre-College Programs, lead, oversee, and/or support all pre-college online offerings, including the Summer@Brown Online program, the Leadership Institute online, and other online initiatives (50%)
  • Lead and oversee the curriculum development and management of Humanities courses within Summer@Brown, both online and in person (40%)
  • Contribute to the ongoing strategic development of the Division in daily administrative activities (10%)

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of experience required or equivalent combination of education & experience. Master’s degree in Online/Digital Learning, Humanities or related field preferred.
  • Experience with online education is required.
  • Experience teaching or supervising programs focused on online education preferred

JOB COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of online education theories and frameworks is preferred
  • Proficiency with Canvas, Salesforce, and other data/learning management systems preferred
  • Working with high school and/or college-age students strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment
