Job Description:

The Assistant Director, Leave and Accommodation Services will manage daily operations, lead strategic and operational planning, and collaborate on policy and program development of workplace accommodations and multi-state leave programs. The Assistant Director serves in a lead capacity under the direction of the Director, Benefits Operations and is responsible for overseeing the University’s compliance when responding to employees’ requests for workplace accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), applicable state disability laws and University policies. Maintains database of requested accommodations of approvals/denials for reporting purposes; makes recommendations for alternative accommodations in accordance with law; provides training as a subject matter expert; and serves as counseling resource on accommodation matters to University committees and participates in working groups as needed.  As the subject matter expert, the Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the development of the Accommodations and Leaves area and its services to the fullest potential. The Assistant Director provides oversight, management, and development of the Leave and Accommodation Manager.

The Assistant Director must have comprehensive understanding, knowledge and experience applying state and federal disability and leave laws and the ability to exercise independent judgment.

The incumbent will work closely with the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED), Human Resources Business Partners in various departments, the Office of General Counsel and other key stakeholders.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 6-8 years of experience of leaves and accommodation management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of leave and accommodation processes, policies, and applicable federal, state and local laws.
  • Expert knowledge and practical experience in applying law, policy, processes and tools of leave and accommodations program to a variety of employee types and situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workflow, process improvement initiatives and project execution.
  • Experience with case documentation management applications such as Workday.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work professionally with persons at all levels and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Well-developed writing skills to regularly draft correspondence and to present project information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress.
  • Tact, discretion, professionalism, maturity and outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required.
  • An ability and commitment to observing the strict confidentiality of sensitive information maintained by University Human Resources.
  • Specific experience with the implementation of policies and procedures directly related to FMLA and ADA.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision and meet stated deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
