Job Description:

The Associate Director for Graduate Student Activities and Student Leadership Development is a member of the leadership team in the Student Activities Office, setting strategic goals and overseeing two major functional areas: graduate student engagement and student leadership development. The Associate Director is responsible for setting the strategic direction and goals for, and ensuring the implementation of, campus engagement activities, organizational advising, major event management, and leadership development opportunities for Brown’s graduate students. Additionally, the Associate Director is responsible for setting strategic direction and goals for, and ensuring the creation and implementation of, leadership development programs for all Brown students. The Associate Director supervises two full-time professional staff members who, in turn, supervise student employees. The Associate Director oversees the development and implementation of major departmental processes such as data management, communications, and administrative systems across all Student Activities Office functions.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree required.
  • 5-7 years of experience in higher education student activities, campus events, and/or student leadership development; or the equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Event planning or program development experience required.
  • Demonstrated commitment and success working in a multicultural environment with a critical understanding of social justice issues in both student and workplace settings.
  • Experience supervising and coordinating students required.
  • Experience in an academic setting and working with graduate students is strongly preferred.

Job Competencies

  • Understanding of issues of social justice, especially in regards to race and ethnicity and how they intersect with other social identities (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, class).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible to change and interruptions, ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
