UC San Diego is seeking an experienced academic leader to head our Engaged Teaching team in the Teaching and Learning Commons (the Commons) and engaged teaching efforts across the UC San Diego campus.

The mission of the Teaching and Learning Commons is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; be an incubator for student academic success innovations; increase access to education on campus and beyond; and advance equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services. The Commons’ work encompasses four areas: instructor support to advance teaching excellence; undergraduate and graduate student support to advance student success at UC San Diego and beyond; intellectual and professional development of graduate and undergraduate students, including Commons’ student employees; and equity and inclusion for all UC San Diego students, staff, and educators.

The Director of Engaged Teaching collaborates with the Commons leadership team to provide high-level services to the instructional community in order to advance an equity-focused student success ecosystem for student retention, success, and goal completion at UC San Diego.

The incumbent is responsible for providing leadership to support the entire university’s teaching community (ladder-rank professors, teaching professors, non-Senate lecturers, faculty adjuncts, graduate student instructional assistants, and postdoctoral scholars preparing to enter the faculty ranks); building close relationships with academic departments, faculty, and units with a goal toward closing equity gaps for historically underrepresented, minoritized students through inclusive and equitable teaching practices; serving as a campus resource for information about teaching and learning; developing and facilitating learning communities; and promoting and disseminating research and scholarship on student learning and university teaching, including evidence-based assessment practices.

As a leader in Engaged Teaching, the Director will promote teaching and learning as ongoing and collaborative processes of inquiry, experimentation, and reflection; design and facilitate educational development programs and services that are grounded in learner-centered, equity-minded, and anti-racist theories and practices; contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning; and promote a university culture that advances UC San Diego’s mission as a student-centered public research university.

As a member of the Teaching + Learning Commons, the incumbent is responsible for contributing to the Commons’ mission, vision, and strategic plan, as well as UC San Diego’s Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence. This includes identifying priorities; setting short- and long-term goals; and implementing, monitoring, and assessing progress. The director also plays a key role in developing and sustaining a culture of equity and collaboration within the Commons and campus-wide, and developing and implementing methods for assessing the impact of the Teaching + Learning Commons initiatives and programs on student learning.

The Director has operational responsibilities for Engaged Teaching, including budget management, program assessment and planning, and hiring, training, and supervision of professional and student staff.
