University of Chicago — Part-Time Lecturer in Environmental and Urban Studies – Sustainable Urban Development

The Social Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for a part-time Lecturer to teach a course on sustainable urban development in the Environmental and Urban Studies major in winter quarter 2023. The Environmental and Urban Studies major is the undergraduate program in the Committee on Environment, Geography and Urbanization (CEGU). It encourages interdisciplinary approaches to the study of environment, geography, and urbanization grounded in theoretical frameworks and research methods from the social sciences and humanities, complemented by approaches from environmental sciences, urban planning and design, and urban science. The Lecturers will teach one section of ENST 20150: Sustainable Urban Development, a required course for students majoring in Environmental and Urban Studies, in Winter 2023. The course uses perspectives from the social sciences and humanities to examine cities as complex socio-natural systems. A full course description is available in the College Catalog: A course syllabus will be provided, but the Lecturer will be encouraged to create their own course material based on interests and experience. Responsibilities include preparing and teaching a seminar-style course, holding regularly scheduled office hours, preparing and grading assignments, and attending staff meetings.

This position requires an advanced degree in an area relevant to environmental social sciences and experience teaching at the college level. Experience teaching in an area relevant to environmental and urban studies is preferred.
