Assistant Director for Multicultural Outreach

Penn State's Admissions department is seeking to hire an Assistant Director for Multicultural Outreach. Responsible to the Director for Multicultural Outreach – Undergraduate Admissions Office for assisting with the daily oversight of staff and office operations, including:

  • intermediate planning, organizing, directing and facilitating;
  • assisting with the preparation and administration of the general budget;
  • hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating staff;
  • effectively implementing policies and procedures to perform the managerial and supervisory tasks involved with participating in campus, college and community relations;
  • creating, implementing, collaborating, and overseeing special events and cultural, educational, or social nature programs for undergraduate students, high school counselors, and community based organizations;
  • liaising with remote admissions offices, campuses and colleges to coordinate efforts across the University;
  • prioritizing, planning, delegating, assigning deadlines, reviewing completed work of others to verify technical soundness and adherence to deadlines;
  • coaching, mentoring, and motivating staff in a fair and consistent manner to achieve goals;
  • coaching employees on practices that promote the values of diversity and inclusion, safety, and environmental consciousness in the workplace;
  • developing creative and innovative recommendations for solving problems;
  • communicating up and down the organizational chart with clarity;
  • identifying and implementing changes and improvements;
  • collecting and analyzing data, documenting, presenting and reporting; and
  • leading Multicultural Outreach to monitor staff review and holistic assessment of campus/college options with applicants.

The Assistant Director will also represent the University in professional meetings, give admissions presentations, conduct high school visits, and participate in college fairs; develop strong, collaborative relationships with high school counselors, community leaders, and college and campus leadership that help promote higher education access for students in-state and out-of-state with focus on underrepresented students. Supervise and provide leadership and direction to the Multicultural Outreach counselor and staff assistant as well as multiple undergraduate interns. In partnership with the Visitation Team, provide a level of assistance and leadership to the daily functions of the student volunteer tour group, S.M.A.R.T.

Education and experience:

Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional years of work-related experience in educational administration or translatable experience in a related field preferred.

Experience with PeopleSoft, All aspects of Excel reporting and customer relationship management tools preferred. Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and organizational skills with the ability to manage concurrent projects are required. Travel and some evening/weekend work required.
