The Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs is dedicated to ensuring a supportive, challenging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate living and learning environment for the approximately 6,000 pre-college students who hail from all 50 states in the U.S. and over 70 countries.

A leader in the field of higher education institutions that provide rigorous academic opportunities to students, Brown University’s Pre-College Programs offer high school students (14-18 years old) an opportunity to study a wide range of liberal arts subjects that reflect the breadth of Brown’s undergraduate Open Curriculum while strengthening their connection to a robust community of peer scholars from around the world. Students develop personal and social skills that are critical to success in the college setting and get a feel for what college life is like – the responsibility, the freedom, and the new friendships. GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Student Life Managers serve as vital members of the Pre-College Student Life leadership team within the Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs. Student Life Managers are responsible for fostering the growth and development of seasonal staff members. This position will directly supervise a cohort of seasonal staff, providing ongoing training, consultation, and mentorship as they develop student support, customer service, supervision, and project management skills. The Student Life Manager for Pre-College Student Life will also participate in the summer on-call rotation (night and weekend work is required).

This is a 3-month position with an online training period estimated to start around May 14, 2023 and an on-site date of June 1, 2023. Student Life Managers will be provided a summer meal plan. Due to the on-call requirements, the person in this position must live within a 25-minute driving distance to the Brown University campus. On-campus housing will be provided, as needed.

Student Life Managers will also receive an auxiliary assignment supporting either Residence Education, Student Development and Engagement, or Housing Operations. These assignments will be made based on interest and previous work experience.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support Pre-College student development and engagement.

  • Communicate University and program housing policies and regulations as well as acceptable standards of conduct within the residence hall and larger campus communities.
  • Assist seasonal staff with individual and group concerns regarding conflict resolution and mediation.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation where seasonal staff will reach out for assistance with matters as they arise. On-call coverage spans daytime, evening, weekends, and holidays.
  • Hold Pre-College Programs accountable for their behavior in accordance with the summer non-academic policies.
  • Serve as a primary administrator for non-academic student conduct cases, as needed.
  • Serve as a case manager for student wellness concerns, as needed.

Support seasonal staff development and retention.

  • Supervise a cohort of seasonal staff as paraprofessionals in critical residential roles, ensuring that a comprehensive and consistent program of support and accountability for staff is maintained.
  • Co-facilitate weekly seasonal staff meetings to provide updates on behalf of the Pre-College Student life professional team, review community trends and issues, and address questions and concerns for staff members.
  • Meet individually with assigned staff to provide guidance and support regarding staff and student needs and to provide holistic mentorship, contributing to staff’s professional development and skill development articulation.
  • Provide adequate guidance and support to assigned staff in their work with seasonal staff and students to ensure that student engagement is developmentally appropriate, student-centered, and supports inclusive communities.
  • Assist assigned staff in managing budgets for their areas, including, monitoring and approving seasonal staff expenditures, processing financial transactions for assigned buildings, and ensuring alignment of spending with Divisional and University purchasing policies.
  • Provide ongoing verbal and written feedback to assigned staff regarding their overall job performance and professional development, including student support competencies, customer service abilities, supervisory skills, project management skills, and contributions to the larger staff team.
  • Participate in online and in-person training to understand the program and how you will be supporting seasonal staff.
    • Complete all assigned online training modules prior to your arrival on campus, including completing all assessment tools.
    • Attend and participate in all staff training periods – running in various forms between May 14 to June 23, 2023
    • Facilitate pre-planned training sessions for seasonal staff.
    • Hold staff accountable for actively engaging in sessions and completing relevant quizzes and other assessment tools.

Support Pre-College operations.

  • Respond to inquiries quickly, thoroughly, and productively to ensure program participants and their families and other support systems continue to have confidence and comfort in the program’s ability to support them toward successful completion.
  • Be visible, available, and approachable to support participants and their families and other support systems.
  • Provide developmental advising for participants and make appropriate referrals to colleagues and/or emergency support personnel, as necessary.
  • Communicate and implement housing-related processes for residence hall check-in, check-out, overnight leave requests, non-sponsored campus-departure requests, fire drills, health and safety checks, room changes, damage billing, and other processes, as needed.
  • Facilitate check-ins for residential programs and orientation sessions as a visible member of the Pre-College Student Life team.
  • Work in conjunction with the Pre-College Student Life professional staff colleagues to make determinations regarding whether or not a participant needs to leave the program for their own well-being, and communicate with appropriate family and other support systems in that decision-making process.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance Pre-College Student Life policies, protocols, and processes towards a more inclusive and seamless experience, and collaborate towards their development and implementation.
  • Participate in departmental and Divisional meetings.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of privacy, confidentiality, discretional, and diplomacy at all times.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Employment dates are May 14 – August 5, 2023
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in higher education, education, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Experience in education/student affairs administration including administrative experience in residential, educational, or similar organizations required.
  • Experience supervising paraprofessional staff and implementing programs preferred.
  • Experience with crisis response and crisis management preferred.
  • Evening and weekend work expected. A typical week will be 40 hours of work, however, the number of hours per week will fluctuate based on campus and residential community needs.
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices, and theories of student learning and development; understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of students in residential communities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse staff and student body and demonstrate cultural competence and inclusiveness; sensitivity to an understanding of diverse perspectives that students and staff bring to their work, including those of academic, socioeconomic, culture, race and ethnicity, ability, gender, sexuality, and intersectional identities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Demonstrate the ability to creatively and efficiently problem solve, utilizing sound judgment, assuming ownership of a problem, and resolving it in a collaborative manner.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills, organizational skills, and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrate record of exercising effective independent professional judgment and integrity, and maintaining confidentiality.

  • Identify, judge, observe, inspect, and assess facility needs.
  • Communicate/exchange accurate information with program participants who have questions about their campus experience, including housing needs, health and safety concerns, and conduct matters.
  • Detect, determine, perceive, assess, and synthesize information.
  • Move about inside the office and throughout all residence halls – encompassing ~2.1 million square feet.
  • Due to the on-call requirements, the person in this position must be able to exercise good judgment with minimal sleep.
  • Occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • $12,500.00 taxable stipend, paid bi-weekly and will be prorated in the instance of early departure.
  • A meal plan is provided and not included in compensation.
  • On-campus housing of a single room will be provided as needed and is not included in compensation.
  • Permitted four vacation days with prior approval by supervisor. Please note that these vacation days are to be used during the contracted dates and are not able to be exchanged for additional compensation at the conclusion of the contract.
  • A smart phone to use for work-related purposes.
  • Free on-campus parking and free ridership on RIPTA (Rhode Island Public Transit Authority)

TERMS
The Student Life Manager positions with Brown University are at-will positions, which means that either the University or the Student Life Manager may discontinue employment at any time and for any reason, prior to the conclusion of the Program. Termination of employment includes loss of provided benefits. In the event of termination, the Student Life Manager will receive a prorated share of the agreed upon stipend amount offered in exchange for the services provided.
