Brown University — Research Assistant

Job Description:

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the manufacturing of drug delivery systems using polymer encapsulation techniques. In addition, the Research Assistant will be required to follow procedures for the purpose of validating the successful production of nanoparticles. The Research Assistant will use Furrier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR), differential thermal analysis (DSC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and to follow pre-written procedures. The Research Assistant will also operate additional machines and equipment such as microscopes and others built in lab. In addition, the Research Assistant will ensure the lab equipment and materials are restocked as needed.

The Mathiowitz lab focuses on developing smart delivery systems based on bioadhesive polymers, which enhance the non- specific interaction with intestinal mucosa by inducing reversible secondary bonds and prolonging the residence time of traditional and novel oral dosage forms. The lab has pioneered efforts in the area of nanomedicine by developing spontaneously forming biodegradable nanoparticles that in contrast to traditional thinking that mucosal barrier will prevent those particles from even passing the mucosal tissue. In addition, the lab works with polymers, vascular grafts and micro/nanoencapsulation and uses a combination of basic scientific concepts in interfacial biophysics and applies them to improving health.

This is a fixed-term position with a current end date of one year from hire, which may be extended based upon available funding.
