The Assistant Director of Research Development serves in a strategic role as part of the Research Strategy, Analysis and Development team within the Office of Research Strategy and Development. This group provides research leadership, builds research capacity and enables funding for research at Brown. The group accomplishes this by working with the Senior Director, Vice President for Research and other Brown leaders to develop and support research priorities across the university; strengthening connections, processes, skills and knowledge to continuously grow capacity for research excellence at Brown; and by increasing external research funding to enable world class research at Brown.

The Assistant Director of Research Development develops a strategy around how to maintain and increase the level of research development support for faculty at Brown University, and executes around this strategy. The Assistant Director of Research Development will identify and develop research strengths and capabilities within Brown; create and document office processes to maximize efficiency and increase the reach of the office; assist in the development of opportunities for strengthening faculty research capabilities including grant writing workshops and networking events; provide research development support for proposals in assigned areas; develop broader impacts and outreach components for proposals by liaising with other offices across campus; and oversee dissemination of strategic funding opportunities to Brown faculty. Additionally, the Research Development Associate is responsible for providing competitive intelligence for Brown priority research areas, using tools including Academic Analytics and Cognos.

This is a dual graded position posting. The candidate’s qualifications/experience will determine if the position is filled at a grade 10 or grade 11 level.

Assistant Director of Research Development/Grade 11

Education

  • Required: Graduate degree and at least 5-7 years of related experience in a university or research institute or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

  • Experience analyzing RFPs and interacting with university faculty
  • Experience working with academic data platforms such as Academic Analytics
  • Ability to work independently, coordinating and prioritizing multiple projects
  • Strong organizational and customer service skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to make effective presentations
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Project management and data literacy skills a plus

Job Competencies

  • Knowledge of federal and private research funding organizations and proposal requirements
  • Microsoft and Google suite tools
  • Filemaker
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

Research Development Associate/Grade 10

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree and 3- 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Experience

  • University or research institute experience preferred.
  • Experience analyzing RFPs and interacting with university faculty.
  • Ability to work independently, coordinating and prioritizing multiple projects.
  • Strong organizational and customer service skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to make effective presentations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
