Job Description:

Facilitates and assumes leadership role in providing guidance and assistance to Divisional research community (including hospital-employed principal investigators) on all aspects of pre-award administration and compliance specifically, in areas of proposal budget development, proposal review, proposal signing and proposal submission. The Assistant Director will provide support to the Director, faculty and staff engaged in externally sponsored programs to help assure compliance with sponsoring agencies requirements while protecting and advocating for the interest of the Division and the research faculty. With the Director of Pre-Award Services, identify, define and resolve issues related to sponsored project activities in accordance with federal, other government, funding agency and institutional policies and regulations. Provide expertise in current regulations and best practices. Participate in Huron system implementation, staff supervision, and staff development. Support Divisional research enterprise providing expertise, customer service and support to faculty in the pursuit of external support for scholarly and pedagogical activities.

Job Qualifications 

Education and Experience

•    Bachelor degree required preferably in business administration or related field (Master’s Degree preferred);
•    plus at least 5-7 years grant related work experience (pre-award experience preferred);
•    experience using the internal (COEUS, Workday Financial Reporting) and external (Fastlane, Research.gov, NIH Assist, Grants.gov, Workspace, etc.) grant database systems preferred;
•    experience with managing staff preferred;
•    or equivalent combination of skills and experience.

•    Demonstrated knowledge and five to seven years of progressively responsible experience of pre- and post-award research administration in an academic setting, preferably life and health sciences
•    Extensive knowledge of Federal regulations with regard to administration of sponsored projects and sponsor agency practices in particular PHS policies, rules and regulations, and knowledge of NIH, NSF and other Federal agency regulations (uniform guidance (2 C.F.R. Part 200))
•    Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles
•    Knowledge of electronic research administration (grants.gov, proposal central, COEUS, eRA Commons, research.gov)
•    Working Knowledge of various Sponsor eRA Systems (eRA Commons, Fastlane, Proposal Central , HRSA EHB)
•    Excellent computer skills with emphasis on database management programs, spreadsheets and internet browsers
•    A demonstrated ability to work collegially with diverse internal and external constituencies and execute multiple demands as part of a team in support of broader strategic goals of the Division/University (i.e. Academic Enrichment Initiatives)
•    Skill in problem solving and ability to consider multiple alternatives and perspectives. Demonstrated ability to assimilate enormous amounts of information
•    Effective Communication skills to elicit and communicate information, to analyze and negotiate complex issues, and to prepare/present clear, informative and concise materials
•    Demonstrated skills in coaching and managing staff
•    Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment that supports Division and University initiatives
