The Fred and Dina Gretsch School of Music invites applications and nominations for the position of School of Music Chair and Professor.

Within this setting, The Fred and Dinah Gretsch School of Music (see About The Fred and Dinah Gretsch School of Music), offers student-centered degree programs at the bachelor's and master's level. The mission is to provide opportunities for studying and making music within the context of a liberal arts education; to prepare students for careers in music-related fields; to enhance the cultural life of the campuses and surrounding region; and to contribute to the preservation and expansion of our rich musical tradition through performance, composition, education, research and music industry. Students are mentored by a faculty of dedicated teacher-scholars, who are nationally and internationally known in their fields of expertise.

Position Description. Reporting to the Dean of the College, the School of Music Chair is the administrative officer of the School of Music with a modest teaching load. Engagement in an active research agenda is expected within the role. The position is a tenured appointment and requires a terminal degree. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is a fiscal year (12 month), tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Chair's major responsibilities include:

  • Representing the School of Music on the Dean's administrative team, collaborating with other members of the CAH Administrative team in leadership and management of the College, and communicating in a transparent manner with faculty and staff.
  • Providing effective leadership in facilitating the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of the School of Music consistent with those of the College and University.
  • Providing mentoring and support to promote career advancement of School of Music faculty and staff through annual evaluations, and assisting in identifying resources to foster continued growth and development.
  • Determining faculty workload assignments; preparing the budget and expenditure of School of Music funds; and making recommendations regarding appointment, promotion, tenure, dismissal, and salary increases for faculty and staff.
  • Advocating for faculty and programs, demonstrating leadership in scholarship and creative activities, and promoting innovation in teaching and new initiatives within the School of Music.
  • Supporting donor relations through relationship and trust building. Being personable and able to relate to donors, and showing genuine interest in donors' interests. Providing excellent in-person, phone and online customer service. In collaboration with University Advancement and the Office of Donor Relations, working with active and prospective donors to support charitable giving and fund development.

    Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in one of the School of Music content areas
  • An established record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service meriting appointment at the rank of Professor, including a minimum of 5 years full-time college/university teaching experience at the Associate Professor level
  • Evidence of effective leadership and communication skills to guide the successful operation and management of the School of Music
  • Ability to represent faculty and administrative perspectives to advance the mission and vision of the School of Music, College, and University
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives
  • Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the disciplines within the School of Music

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of experience with program assessment and maintenance of NASM accreditation.
  • Evidence of experience with multiple modes of instructional delivery
  • Evidence of experience with faculty governance, leadership, mentoring, or development
  • Evidence of experience with fundraising, budget planning, and personnel management
  • Evidence of experience with recruitment and retention of music majors
  • Evidence of experience with collaboration with relevant community and professional stakeholders
  • Significant experience in academic leadership

    Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
  • All work (with limited exceptions such as research and study abroad and outside activities such as grading and email correspondence) for Georgia Southern University must be completed while the employee is physically present in the state of Georgia, unless specifically authorized by the university for a specific purpose and limited period of time within current policy.
  • Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university community by engaging students, participating in events, and performing other responsibilities on-campus.
  • Faculty may be required to teach, conduct research, or perform service duties on any of the three campuses. Georgia Southern provides accessible transportation options between campuses.
