Emory University — Assistant Teaching Professor in Health Equity

The Center for the Study of Human Health (CSHH) at Emory University is a cross-disciplinary and rapidly growing program that seeks an Assistant Teaching Professor in Health Equity to begin Fall semester of 2023. CSHH is an interdisciplinary liberal arts program encompassing innovative courses and scholarly endeavors with broad perspectives on health and the human condition through a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Human Health, a joint major in Economics and Health, and minors in Predictive Health, Global Health, Culture and Society; Nutrition Science; and Predictive Health. 

We seek a teacher-scholar focused on health equity from across any of the following areas and approaches to human health: bioethics, applied social science methods, determinants of health and wellbeing, health disparities and inequities, minoritized and marginalized communities, health policy, ethnomedicine, One Health, or the biopsychosocial model of health. Geographic area of work is open. Successful applicants must have experience using evidence to evaluate the human experience of health. 

Experience teaching innovative, evidence-based courses in human health-related disciplines at the undergraduate-level is necessary. In addition to electives in their area of expertise, candidates should be able to contribute to our teaching program in: bioethics, public health ethics, health equity, research methods, and critical assessment of scientific research. Successful candidates should demonstrate the desire to integrate their disciplinary background within a broad liberal arts perspective. A history of research and mentoring students outside the classroom are required. 

This is a full‐time, teaching-track position with a courseload of five courses per academic year, including both large lecture courses and small seminars. In addition, successful applicants will be expected to mentor and advise students outside the classroom. The initial appointment will be for a period of three years with renewals and promotions possible within the teaching‐track system, as detailed in the Emory College of Arts and Sciences Guidelines for Appointment of Teaching-Track Faculty (http://college.emory.edu/faculty/faculty/promotion-teaching-track.html). 

Applicants who hold a relevant doctorate should submit: a cover letter; curriculum vitae; a personal statement describing teaching experience and teaching philosophy; two (2) syllabi from representative courses taught; a statement on previous efforts and future plans for diversity, equity, and inclusion, with particular attention to student and classroom inclusion; graduate transcripts; and contact information for three (3) references. CSHH’s commitment to and progress on equity, inclusion, and diversity will be discussed with candidates at interview. Review begins November 28, 2022.
