The Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences at Cleveland State University invites applicants for a new, tenure-track assistant professor position in Earth Systems Science and Data Analytics starting August 21, 2023. CSU is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. CSU strives to be a nationally recognized and student-focused public research institution that provides accessible, affordable, and Engaged Learning opportunities for all.

Successful candidates will contribute to and expand department strengths, including conducting internationally recognized research and interdisciplinary teaching in the B.S. and M.S. degree programs in Environmental Science. Candidates skilled in environmental data science with strengths complimentary to our existing faculty, such as ecoinformatics, omics, and multi-systems science (i.e., interfaces of land-water, human-natural systems), as well as aquatic systems, are especially encouraged to apply.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in earth science, environmental science, ecology, natural resource management, or related disciplines and one year of postdoctoral research experience, or equivalent, accumulated by date of hire;
  • Substantive answer describing experience serving diverse students or plans to make a positive contribution to CSU’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and
  • Experience with diverse forms of environmental data and tools for data analysis, visualization, and modeling, and intent and potential to teach courses using these tools in earth science systems, environmental science, natural resource management, and/or other applied sciences

Preferred qualifications:

  • More than one year of experience as a postdoctoral researcher, or equivalent;
  • Expertise in data management, analysis, and visualization (e.g.R, Python, SQL, QGIS);
  • Intent and potential to acquire external funding (e.g., from NSF, NASA, USDA, EPA, and/or NIEHS);
  • Authorship of peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals;
  • Substantial teaching experience (e.g., as an instructor of an undergraduate course);
  • Intent and potential to help develop one or more courses for a new ‘data analytics’ track for environmental science students (B.S. & M.S.) or for other interdisciplinary degree programs, as well as a course teaching field skills and data collection focused on aquatic systems
  • Expertise that is complementary to other CSU faculty and regional research partners (e.g., urban ecosystems, global change, macroecology, environmental pollution, restoration ecology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, natural resource management, population ecology); and
  • Intent and potential to positively engage diverse students within CSU’s academic community

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and competitive with other research-intensive universities. Substantial startup funds are available, proportional to the potential for acquiring external funding.

Excellent opportunities for collaboration and outreach beyond the department exist within the intercollege Center for Research on the Urban Environment (CRUE) and the new Center for Applied Data Analysis and Modeling (ADAM).
