Chapman University — Dean of the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering

Chapman University seeks a collaborative, inclusive, equity-minded and forward-thinking academic leader to serve as the Dean of the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering. Applications, inquiries and nominations are invited.

Chapman University is a nationally ranked institution offering traditional undergraduate and graduate programs in the heart of Orange County, one of Southern California’s most diverse and vibrant regions. The university holds R2 status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, a distinction held by just 10 percent of all U.S. universities. Chapman’s campus is home to approximately 9,500 students from 49 states, the U.S. territories and more than 60 different countries. Students have access to 11 schools and colleges that offer rigorous undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences, innovative interdisciplinary programs and select pre-professional and graduate programs.

Opened in the fall of 2019, the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering (Fowler Engineering) offers undergraduate degree programs in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Electrical Engineering and Software Engineering. Fowler Engineering is committed to contributing solutions to global challenges and to building truly inclusive and equitable faculty, staff and student experiences. The newly opened Swenson Family Hall of Engineering provides state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research that allow for experiences that are truly without boundaries. Through Chapman’s Grand Challenges Initiative, students have the opportunity to work with interdisciplinary teams — not just fellow engineers, but also students in other sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, providing them with an unparalleled experience in collaborative problem solving that will benefit them throughout their careers.

The next Dean will continue to build upon the strong and innovative foundation of the recently created school. They will provide strategic, academic and administrative leadership for the undergraduate and graduate engineering and computer science programs, guide the development of a unifying vision for the future and champion meaningful partnerships within Chapman University and the business communities across the state of California and the globe. Working closely with administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni and other stakeholders, the Dean will guide the school’s academic and strategic planning in alignment with the university’s strategic plan, advance its reputation as an innovative and inclusive engineering school and strengthen the school’s impact and reputation through strategic fundraising, faculty and staff recruitment and retention efforts, enrollment growth and industry partnerships.

The Dean will possess excellent communication and relationship-building skills and a demonstrated ability to work well as a collaborative and consultative member of the university community. The Dean will work to advance diversity from historically underrepresented and underserved populations, articulate an understanding of the educational and social value of a diverse community, foster an inclusive educational and workplace climate, and lead efforts within the Fowler School to support the diversity and inclusion goals of Chapman University. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited institution and have a record of teaching and scholarly or professional attainment that merits appointment as professor with tenure.
