Boston University — President

Boston University (BU) invites nominations and applications for the position of President.

Boston University is an international, comprehensive, private research university, committed to educating students to be reflective, resourceful individuals ready to live, adapt, and lead in an interconnected world. Established in 1839 and chartered in 1869, Boston University employs over 4,000 world-class faculty in various disciplines and offers more than 350 highly ranked undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Together with academic excellence and global outreach, a core value and central pillar of Boston University’s 2030 Strategic Plan is our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, fairness, and social consciousness. Boston University demonstrates this commitment through the launch of the Center for Antiracist Research with founder and Director Ibram X. Kendi, the establishment of the Newbury Center for first-generation students, and the expansion of the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground.

Located in the heart of Boston, the University currently enrolls nearly 37,000 graduate and undergraduate students in 17 schools and colleges on three campuses comprising 140 acres. Boston University students are outstanding scholars and leaders, producing new knowledge as they prepare to change the future of the world. One quarter of this fall’s domestic freshman class are Pell Grant recipients, 19.4% are first-generation students, and 31% are from underrepresented groups. The University has invested significantly in world-class research infrastructure, such as the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL), and innovative interdisciplinary research as exemplified by the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences established in 2019. Boston University’s sponsored program awards (excluding financial aid) totaled $531 million in FY2022; the University was invited in 2012 to join the Association of American Universities (AAU), the leading group of North American research universities. Boston University’s education and research programs are sustained by an annual operating budget of over $2.7 billion, supported partly by an endowment valued at roughly $3 billion in FY2022.

Boston University seeks a visionary ready to lead a premier research university through higher education’s evolving landscape, a distinguished scholar in their respective field, and an experienced administrator to serve as the institution’s 11th president. Reporting to the Board of Trustees and building on a strong foundation of prudent management leveraged by a seasoned senior executive team, the next president will continue to enhance the institution’s academic quality and international standing and serve as the primary advocate for Boston University’s interests and will collaborate across all constituencies to continue our sustained progress. The candidate must also demonstrate core values that align with Boston University’s longstanding commitment to socioeconomic access, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

By nurturing research breakthroughs that address pressing societal needs and educating graduate and undergraduate students as thoughtful future leaders, the next president will prepare our scholars to succeed and lead with resilience and integrity in their professional and personal lives. The next president will exhibit vital emotional intelligence and the ability to connect with all University stakeholders to unify the community around Boston University’s priorities for the future. The next president will also serve as the University’s chief fundraiser, carrying forward momentum from the recently completed $1.85 billion campaign and garnering the resources necessary to support the strategic mission of the University.

As the chief executive officer of Boston University, which is a centrally budgeted institution, it is essential for the next president to possess excellent financial and operational management acumen. Candidates for the position must also possess extensive academic leadership experience, a track record of fundraising success, and take an ardent approach to attracting and retaining talent that upholds the University’s standing as a world-class research institution.
