The Genomics Data Scientist/Senior Genomics Data Scientist will join Brown’s Computational Biology Core as part of the Advanced Research Computing group within the Center for Computing and Visualization ( Within CBC, The Genomics Data Scientist will provide the scientific and technical computing expertise required to advance computational biology research and support Brown’s academic mission. The selected candidate will  support data analysis and software engineering requirements for developing standard practices for the analysis of high dimensional genomics data generated within Brown’s Center for Computational Biology of Human Disease (

The incumbent will be charged with the development, implementation, and technical support for the research projects using NGS datasets within the Core. They will apply robust software engineering techniques to develop workflows and web applications for analysis and visualization of genomics data generated by collaborators of the Core. The incumbent will be an active participant in exploring creative new approaches for leveraging existing tools and publicly available genomics data in alignment with the vision of the Center for Computational Biology of Human Disease. The incumbent will work collaboratively with other members of the Advanced Research Computing group at CCV, who  are a team of data scientists and research software engineers with a wide range of scientific backgrounds (e.g., Engineering, Physics, Computer Vision, Biology, Psychology, Statistics, Applied Math, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Industry, etc.).

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate, at a minimum, should meet one or more of the following:

  • Grade 10: Bachelor’s  degree  with a minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience or equivalent education and experience in data analysis/software engineering preferably in the genomics arena.
  • Grade 11 (Senior): Master’s degree with strong computational emphasis such as Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related field, plus 4 years of experience, preferable in the genomics area (equivalent experience may be an acceptable substitute)
  • Expertise in Python, Julia, or R Programming
  • Working knowledge of SQL, Bash scripting, and the Linux operating system.
  • Working knowledge of a compiled programming language, such as C, C++, Rust, Java, or Fortran.
  • Experience with software development and working knowledge of software engineering best practices.
  • High professional standards with the ability to manage competing requirements in a diverse user population
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with strong analytical ability
  • Versatile, enthusiastic and eager to learn new skills and knowledge domains in Biology.
  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills in object oriented technologies and one more compiled languages preferred, including
    • Python, Javascript, Ruby, C, C++, Java
  • Strong Linux skills including bash scripting and system administration are a plus.
  • Domain knowledge in Biology and familiarity with bioinformatics resources (e.g. NCBI), genomics databases such the ENSEMBL ( and UCSC (, and related tools (such as samtools, vcftools, bwa, bowtie) and file formats.
  • Expertise with formal software engineering practices, including testing, continuous integration, Git and branching models (e.g. gitflow, fork & pull request), containerization (e.g. Docker), agile development, and minimum viable products.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas preferred:
    • Web application development
    • Databases and data management
    • Algorithm design and evaluation
    • High-performance and distributed computing
    • Cloud computing, Docker and containerization
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines, and an eagerness to take ownership of challenging and open-ended assignments.
