Job Description:

The Communications and Outreach Specialist in the Brown University School of Public Health (SPH) is part of a fast-moving and vibrant team at the emerging Brown SPH Pandemic Center. The Pandemic Center’s mission is to focus on disease surveillance, public health readiness, health system resilience, crisis communication, workforce training, and global reach. Under the guidance of the Center Director, the Communications and Outreach Specialist’s primary responsibility is to support the research team at the Pandemic Center, specifically in the areas of translating research to reach a wide range of audiences; written and visual content development; and rapid information dissemination. The Communications and Outreach Specialist conceptualizes and maintains the Center’s website; builds and expands a social media presence; translates the Center’s activities into content on various platforms; and runs engagement activities on- and offline. The Communications and Outreach Specialist also is charged with contributing to, SPH’s Pandemic Center’s strategic plans for Public Engagement & Communications and Stakeholder Group Engagement.

In collaboration with the Center Director, the Communications and Outreach Specialist is responsible for interacting regularly with high-level decisionmakers in Washington, DC, and globally to support the growth and success of the Pandemic Center.  In addition, the role collaborates with outside stakeholders and partners on research projects related to public health crisis and is responsible for research into best practices for health communications and ensuring the efficacy of communications.

Job Qualifications 

Education, Experience, and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field, or combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in managing significant aspects of communications
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly produce and edit content for a variety of communications and marketing platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to translate research findings to content suitable for lay audiences across a variety of media and social media channels
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines with quality work
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships and coordinate among various partners and  constituencies, both internal and external, to establish and further collaborative initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills is  essential
  • Experience developing and implementing integrated communications strategies that span multiple outlets  including print, web, and social media
  • Strong proficiency working with web content management systems and the full range of social media platforms and account management tools.
  • Knowledge of copyright, image use protocols and laws governing online posting of intellectual property
  • Demonstrated ability and flexibility to multi-task, prioritize, and manage diverse job responsibilities while  meeting various deadlines required
  • Must be a team player with the ability to work independently with a strong service-oriented attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive  environment.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in public health, COVID-19, and/or epidemiology is a plus.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 9/30/24, which may be extended based upon available funding.
