Job Description:

The Watson Institute is searching for a motivated and experienced Communications and Outreach Specialist to join our growing communications team.

Working closely with the Associate Director of Strategic Communications, the Communications and Outreach Specialist in the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs is responsible for creating premium, high-visibility content for a range of written communications for the institute’s Communications and Events Team. Writing projects will include, but are not limited to, news releases, websites, online and print publications, and other strategic vehicles intended to demonstrate the institute’s strengths among external audiences.

In addition to researching, writing, and coordinating web content, the Communications and Outreach Specialist supports research for the bi-weekly podcast “Trending Globally: Politics and Policy,” assists with media outreach and strategy, builds the monthly Explore newsletter, produces special communications projects, and serves as a member of the Art at Watson committee. Through strategic, public-facing, high-quality communications, this position supports Watson’s mission and helps expand its reputation as a leading center for international and public affairs.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
  • Strong background in working in the context of a research university strongly preferred.

Job Competencies

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including proficiency in Associated Press writing style
  • Demonstrated ability to research information, conduct effective interviews and write well and quickly
  • Ability to write and edit at a high-level professional capacity and maintain the highest editorial standards for both web and print materials.
  • Experience using computing tools for conducting research on the Internet, for communicating by e-mail, for writing documents that are properly formatted in appropriate templates, and maintaining appropriate story databases
  • Experience developing effective messaging tailored to audiences
  • Ability to sustain and build rapport with stakeholders
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
