Brown University — Biological Safety Specialist

Job Description:

The Biological Safety Specialist provides support to faculty, students, and staff to help facilitate, assess, and promote a safe and healthy working environment in research laboratories and research support spaces.   The major responsibilities for this position will be to support the biological safety program as the University rapidly expands its research activities by providing training, conducting inspections, supporting the work of the Institutional Biosafety Committee, assessing ventilation equipment, assisting with biological shipments and day to day management of the University’s Biological Waste Program. In addition, this position will also be on a rotating on-call team for emergency response and help with other safety and compliance related projects as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • B.S. in Biology or related science or A.S. in Biology and equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience working in a research laboratory or safety department ensuring environmental compliance.

Job Competencies

  • Working knowledge of molecular biology and basic principles of infection control in both laboratory and clinical settings
  • Familiarity with the regulations found in the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030)
  • Capable of obtaining medical clearances for using respiratory protection necessary for HAZMAT response, including completion of an annual respirator fit test.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Must be able to obtain IATA and DOT hazardous materials shipping certifications.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds to shoulder height.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
