Three African Americans Appointed to Diversity Posts in Higher Education

Tony Boston was named the inaugural vice president and chief diversity officer at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, effective October 24. He has been serving as interim dean for institutional diversity and chief diversity officer at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Earlier, Dr. Boston was the senior associate dean and special advisor to the president at Pomona College in California.

Dr. Boston earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Whittier College in California. He holds a doctorate from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences in Kirksville, Missouri.

Takiyah Nur Amin was named director of diversity, equity, and inclusion for the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design at Virginia Tech. She was an assistant professor of world dance at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Earlier, she was an instructor in the Africana studies program and the department of history at Virginia Tech.

Dr. Amin holds a bachelor’s degree in dance from the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York System. She holds a master of fine arts degree in arts administration from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. in dance studies from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Barbara J. Lawrence was named director of the Division of Justice, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. The new division includes the department of public safety, student accessibility and support services, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and Title IX compliance. Lawrence has been serving as the chief diversity officer at the university.

Lawrence received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. She earned a master of public administration degree from Indiana University-Purdue University and a juris doctorate from the Indiana University School of Law.
