North Carolina A&T State University Announces Record Enrollments

Many historically Black colleges and universities are seeing an uptick in enrollments. In some cases, enrollment increases have been substantial.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University recently announced that the school is educating about 13,500 students for the 2022-2023 academic year, making it the largest historically Black university in the nation for the ninth straight year and the largest enrollment ever recorded by an HBCU.

With a first-year class of about 3,000, new faces made up mostly of students of African descent, the university says it enrolls more Black freshmen than the top 10 national universities each year. The university’s average first-year student arrives with a 3.7 high school grade point average and SAT scores well over 1,000.

“Our measured, strategic growth at virtually every level is in perfect alignment with the A&T strategic plan, which calls for an enrollment of 14,000 by Fall 2023,” said Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr., who, starting his fourteenth year, is now the longest currently serving chancellor in the UNC System.
