Job Description

The Ecological Restoration Institute seeks a Post-Doctoral Candidate who will be performing experimental forest operations and biomass utilization research to facilitate forest restorations and fuels reduction thinning treatments in northern Arizona. The successful applicant will work collaboratively to develop new research projects; manage on-going research activities, support ERI’s outreach programs on federal, state, tribal, and private lands; and assist in the development of innovative forest operations and wood utilization strategies.

Study Design and Implementation – 30%

  • Develop study plans, carry out research experiments, and prepare technical reports in the utilization of forest residues for production of biochar
  • Development of strategies and planning for marketing forest products.

Research and Publications – 30%

  • Literature review to synthesize the opportunities and challenges associated with manufacturing various forest products utilizing small-diameter trees and biomass.
  • Publication of peer-reviewed journal articles summarizing research articles
  • Presentation of project results to internal and external parties.
  • Engaged in fieldwork and writing of technical publications and reports.

Partnership and Collaboration – 20%

  • Assists ERI researchers and other collaborators, or may act independently, in planning and designing research experiments, establishing priorities and recommending schedules, timetables and costs.
  • Work with classified staff, graduate assistants, or student employees.

Data Collection and Analysis – 15%

  • Performs statistical analyses, including selecting the appropriate analysis procedure, setting up data for analysis, judging validity and reliability of data, designing and writing programs to perform analyses, and producing written reports on the result of the analyses.
  • Data collection, processing and analysis in forest restoration operations and mechanical fuel reduction thinning treatments.

Other – 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Forest Operations (harvesting & transportation), Forest Products Marketing, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in research design and analytical techniques.
  • Experience with collaborative interdisciplinary research in forest restoration and fuel reduction thinning
  • Familiarity with the southwestern environment and stakeholders.
  • Awareness of and commitment to NAU’s EEO/Affirmative Action Plan and Safe Working and Learning Environment goals.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject disciplines.
  • Sound understanding of ecological restoration principles.

  • Demonstrated technical writing ability and good communication skills.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Salary range begins at $54,779. Annual salary commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents’ Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service. NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
