Job Description:

The Visual Designer in the Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs (PCUG) works to deliver creative services in support of strategic marketing and communications initiatives for the Division. The Visual Designer delivers compelling, innovative designs and creative solutions that effectively communicate strategic intent, establishing PCUG’s look and feel across digital and print channels. Reporting to the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications, and working in concert with the Marketing and Communications team, the Visual Designer develops original design concepts within an established visual identity system for a range of media platforms including web, social media, video and print, through the strategic use of photography, iconography, colors and font treatment. The Visual Designer is responsible for developing and implementing all visual design work in support of the marketing and communications strategy throughout all phases of the student lifecycle, from lead generation and nurturing to applicant, matriculant, registrant, attendee and alumni engagement.

While the majority of PCUG programs currently occur during the summer months, there are additional offerings in the fall, winter and spring for which the Visual Designer is responsible for assisting with building strategy and deploying appropriate design. The Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs is responsible for developing and offering non-credit and credit courses and programs for over 6,000 high school students, as well as Brown University undergraduate and Guest Students. Students participate in programs on Brown University’s Providence campus, as well as online and in other locations nationally and internationally.

As part of Marketing and Communications, the Visual Designer works with teams of staff who are responsible for admissions, enrollment, academic content and instructional delivery, student life, and the full range of business functions supporting programming. Staff work closely with colleagues from across the University to ensure success, including the Registrar’s Office, Office of Information Technology, Office of University Communications and Facilities Management.

Aligned with the Marketing and Communications strategy via web, print, social media and digital design, the Visual Designer is responsible for curating, organizing and managing all image and video assets related to the student lifecycle and aligned with the brand. The position manages, organizes and monitors the creation of original visual content and curates existing and new content and creatives. The Visual Designer is responsible for implementing website edits and updates using primarily the Drupal content management system with some pages in WordPress and Google Sheets. Real-time course correction and new initiatives will occur in each cycle, so the Visual Designer is required to be highly responsive, navigating both long-term projects and short-term needs throughout the year in order to successfully contribute to the sustainability of these programs in an expanding market.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Execute creative, cross-channel design for a range of PCUG programs (60%)
  • Translate marketing and communications strategy through visual design to ensure brand compliance, audience engagement and successful implementation of campaigns and outbound communications across all platforms.(15%)
  • Maintain, edit and update PCUG websites (15%)
  • Review, revise and maintain search engine optimization, tracking return on investment. (10%)


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in visual design, digital arts or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional design experience, including branding, visual identity, web and digital design and/or print design.
  • Portfolio that demonstrates a range of design deliverables across media.
  • Demonstrated expertise in design fundamentals, the ability to think creatively and provide marketable solutions when conceiving, developing and producing deliverables.
  • Experience utilizing digital marketing strategies, tactics and techniques in a professional setting.
  • Advertising, visual design, or web production experience.
  • Experience with online collaboration tools for project management a plus.

Job Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of print, design, media and advertising as well as technology and new media best practices
  • Expertise in using design software, web design and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.)
  • Fluency with current technology developments, digital tools and social media platforms and the ability to learn new systems.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced and deadline-driven marketing or communications environment with limited supervision under tight timeframes.
  • Proficiency with Drupal, customer portals or another CMS (content management system).
  • Excellent organizational, project management and production skills involving multiple, simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to meet stringent deadlines with overlapping projects.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively independently and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
