Brown University — Research Intervention Counselor

Job Description:

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator(s), the Research Intervention Counselor will provide manualized counseling to study participants enrolled in several behavioral HIV prevention and substance-use treatment intervention trials within the Center for Health Promotion and Health Equity. Study participants mainly include individuals from marginalized or disenfranchised groups who are at heightened risk for HIV transmission or acquisition, sexual and gender minorities, people who use substances, men who engage in transactional sex with other men, and those with behavioral health problems, such as depression. This role will support training and guidance on conducting sensitive behavioral assessments, and implementation of de-escalation practices to the research assistants and undergraduate students. This role will serve as initial point of contact for reportable events on active protocols (in coordination with Principal Investigator(s)).

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 05/31/2025 which may be extended based upon available funding.



  • Required:  MA/MS/MSW in psychology, mental health, or behavioral science aspects of public health (or equivalent degree in a related field)
  • Preferred:  LICSW, Training in CBT, behavioral activation, and/or motivational interviewing.


  • 3-4 years of counseling experience with training in CBT, Behavioral Activation, and/or other evidence-based treatments (either during or after completion of graduate degree).
  • Experience working with diverse groups of individuals including but not limited to people living with HIV, people of color, people who identify as LGBTQ, people who engage in sex work, and people with substance use problems.
  • Preferred experience or demonstrated interest in HIV prevention and substance abuse treatment.
  • Prior professional community-based participatory research/implementation research preferred but not required.

Job Competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication/counseling (written and verbal) skills
  • Familiarity with using email and Microsoft word applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Power-Point, Excel, Email)
  • Meticulous attention to detail, organized, and able to work on many different projects simultaneously
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; Able to talk about sensitive topics in a mature manner
  • Interested in health disparities, public health, HIV and sexual and reproductive health
  • Self-starter
  • Candidates must possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
