Job Description:

This position manages the financial, administrative, and human resource operations for the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World. This position also plays the primary role in helping to manage all the Institute’s logistics and events, including all operations, daily administrative needs, and public event planning.  This position will also be responsible for processing financial transactions, and serves as the liaison between the Institute and other departments responsible for determining University-wide policy, procedures, and services (e.g., Dean of the College, Dean of the Faculty, Registrar, Human Resources, Controller’s Office, Budget Office, ORA, Facilities, etc.).  Lastly, this position will supervise multiple doctoral student proctors, event staff, and one or more undergraduate student workers, who will assist in the responsibilities outlined above. We would like this position to continue its central strategic and curatorial role in the Institute’s exhibition program in Rhode Island Hall’s atrium and extensive exhibit spaces, for which this person will assume significant responsibility – including planning, object loans, and management of the Institute’s collections of ancient artifacts and coins, as well as several more recent study collections.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent required; advanced degree preferred; 1-2 years experience in administrative office procedures, preferably in an academic and/or museum environment; 1-2 years experience in event planning and advertising; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a demonstrated aptitude for narrative and persuasive writing and for all aspects of written and oral communication.
  • Conservation and curatorial expertise with archives and collections strongly preferred, including knowledge of best practices in protecting and maintaining both contemporary and ancient artifacts; and in scheduling, designing, and installing museum exhibits
  • Must be a quick learner who is accountable, resourceful, and capable of multi-tasking under the constraints of deadlines and competing priorities while maintaining a sense of humor, and must possess the ability to anticipate logistical problems, work well under deadlines, and to think on one’s feet.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to deal effectively with a diverse population of students, international visitors, parents, staff, faculty, and administrators. Flexibility and a willingness to work cooperatively to provide coverage of events and programmatic needs.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through on projects.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, Filemaker databases, Photoshop, Acrobat, a must.  Experience with Workday, Banner, 25Live, PowerPoint, web editing, and social media, a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
