Job Description:

Brown University Athletics is currently seeking candidates for the Assistant Coach – Track & Field, Sprints/Hurdles/Vertical Jumps position.  Located in Providence, Rhode Island, and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 34 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-D1).

Reporting to the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, this position will be responsible for the preparation of student-athletes for practices, team functions, and competitive events. Job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning, instruction, and/or positive motivation needed to meet this responsibility successfully.
  • Leading student athletes on best performance practices, game strategies and safety rules
  • Provide support to and at the direction of the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country to carry out the successful management of the sport programs.

Entry into the candidate pool requires the following:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree
  • Minimum of 4 years coaching or competing experience at the collegiate level or above


  • Require effective recruiting and retention strategies to include the evaluation of potential student athletes’ strengths and weaknesses in determining a fit within program’s needs.
  • Embodies a holistic approach to developing the Ivy League student athlete in conjunction with University or Athletic Department policies while serving as a mentor to student-athletes on academic and individual issues.
  • Knowledge of sport-specific fundamentals, techniques and safety rules & regulations
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, communicate, and adhere to Brown University, Ivy League and NCAA policies, procedures, rules and regulations
  • Excellent communication (oral & written)
  • Ability to recruit on a national and international level.
  • Instruct and motivate student-athletes of varying backgrounds and demographics.
  • Ability to influence and build positive relationships with alumni and the general public and amongst all individuals a diverse university setting.
  • Must have the ability and motivation to adapt to changing technology impacting the sports
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, or similar programs
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment

All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA and Ivy League rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division are to be reported to the appropriate parties.  Employees in coaching positions are required to pass the NCAA Coaches Certification Test, maintain current AED/CPR & First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Division), and attend all required divisional and/or NCAA training/education programs.
